Hey Randy, I'm assuming you're the author of the SMFLite add-ins, like everything else in this group? I looked in the modules but there is no author listed in the commented section.

Anyways just want to say thank you for writing all this, it's been invaluable to me and lots of other people. It's saved me so much time!!

I do have one question! Unlike most other ppl, I'm using your add-in in a different way. I exported the two modules (modGetYahooQuotes & modUtilities) from your SMFLite example file, and imported it into my own worksheet. This has been a really clean, light-weight way for me to call the RCHGetYahooQuotes functions in brand-new, empty worksheets.

However, looking at the commented section, the module I'm using was last updated in 2009. Do I need to regularly update these modules to ensure they continue to work? And is it correct me to to use just those 2 modules in this way, in new worksheets?

That's why I have the add-in and avoid the SMFLite workbooks. EACH ONE
would need to be individually updated. And which modules need to be used
may change over time.

However, after the first SMFLite workbook, I did try to break up the
modules into pieces that could be used separately. So there shouldn't be a
lot of issues of intertwining of code between a number of modules.

It still doesn't seem to be working. When I go onto the Yahoo site and pull daily prices, that now updates with today's closing price (it was still reflecting yesterday's price as of 7pm EST) - but when I update my spreadsheet it's still showing yesterday's closing prices.

I understand this is a Yahoo problem - and not something on the SMF side, but it's still frustrating. I did "vote" my frustration on the Yahoo feedback site using the link provided in this thread (thank you for that).

Is there any way using SMF to create a similar table of stock prices and other data that would pull from say the Google financial site?

One would think so but not even the originator of the data is always correct.

I trade 2X and -2X index mutual funds at Rydex (now Guggenheim) and have recently downloaded historical data for the funds that track the $NDX and $RUT since their inception. I found 2 classes of errors.

First there were 4 Saturdays on each of the 4 data files that contained blanks (that's how I found them). If the data had been copied into an Excel spreadsheet, the dates would not lined up/been correct. Fortunately the Saturdays in the 4 data files were all the same dates.

Second, and more important, the data did not correct for splits or reverse splits. They just had the closing price on the day of the split. To correct such data you need to know both the split ratio and the actual closing price on the preceding day so the change in value occurring on the day of the split can be backed out. I know this to be true because I have lived through live trades when splits have occurred and made the corrections.

The reason it's not advisable to go to other sources is that you would
generally need to do one web page access per ticker symbol. Yahoo provides
the data for multiple ticker symbols as a CSV file.

Some services allow you to create portfolios (including Yahoo). And many
have a download feature. That might be the best way to sidestep the issue.
However, it will typically involve creating an IE security cookie, so that
you can access your custom portfolios. And for something like Yahoo, there
would be no universal solution, since each individual can create and/or
modify the views of the portfolios, altering which data is present.

A Google alternative might be:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/smf_addin/conversations/messages/20131

...which is in the Yahoo groups files area as:

RCHGetWebData-Google-API-Quotes.xls

I'm not sure of what limitations it might have, since I don't use it.

Today 11/20/14 I got quotes for US stocks for 11/19/14 and for Hong Kong stocks for 11/20/14. So it seems that only Yahoo US site doesn't work. I hope they will fix it.
