I did that and here is the answer I received copied below. I am using
IE and Firefox, so that is not the problem. If others are still having
the problem, as I am, you may also want to let YAHOO! know, so they work
on it
Thanks
Sid

Hello Sid,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Finance.

I understand you're seeing incorrect or inconsistent data when
downloading quotes to a CSV file from Yahoo! Finance. I appreciate you
taking the time to report this issue and I apologize for any
inconvenience caused.

Our engineering team is currently working to correct this, and our goal
is to

Additionally, the information we gathered in your email indicates your
system configuration is not fully supported by Yahoo! Finance. Please
know that most features of Yahoo! Finance will work on all A-grade
browsers, we only officially support and test on Internet Explorer and
Firefox.

I am having a similar issue as well. To resolve the issue, I went down to Work-In-Progress folder and downloaded the beta version of SMF. It helped in preventing the opening a new window of IE but still gives a 'Error' in the cell.

I have been using this file for a while on XP. The only thing changed is that i upgraded IE to version 8. Could that be the case?

Thanks

Can you give me a specific example of a function that gives you "Error"?

ADVFN Toplist Table Retrieval

Hi,

First of all, I can't thank Randy enough for sharing his amazing work. At least, I'm sure it'll be amazing if I can get it working!

I'm trying initially to retrieve a 'Toplist' table from ADVFN. For example The LSE Percentage Gainers using the array formula:

=RCHGetHTMLTable("http://www.advfn.com/p.php?pid=toplist&m=L&tl=1&symbol=VOD","Turn On MoverScope",1,"",1)

I'm just getting blank cells. I've tried the sample file that retrieves option data from Yahoo. Works fine.

Also, I'm assuming the Live java updating tables on ADVFN aren't able to be retrieved using smf_addin?

Thanks in Advance,

Huw.

I get blanks until I log in to AdvFN using the EXCEL Web Query dialog and
then use the smfForceRecalculation macro to get a fresh copy of the web
page.

And you are correct in assuming that the add-in can't grab data from a Java
application. It pulls data from the source code of the web pages.

I use this in an external query. Don't know if it will be of any help here.
With ss.QueryTables(1)
.Connection = _
"URL;http://www.advfn.com/p.php?pid=financials&btn=s_ok&mode=&symbol=" & symbol & "&s_ok=OK"

Hi Randy,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I must have missed something, I was already logged in to ADVFN, but I've closed it down & reopened the spreadsheet to try. I don't get a Web Query dialog & not asked to log in.

I've just set up a Web Query to get the table, that works, but I'm then not using smf_addin?

I'm confused! Are you saying to use Web queries, and not smf_addin for this?

Regards,

Huw.

You don't need to RUN a Web Query. I just wanted you to use the Web Query
dialog to log in -- then you can "Cancel" out.

However, if you could get the table with the Web Query, the add-in function
should be working. Did you try it again after closing down EXCEL and
restarting it?

If it still doesn't work, try using the smfForceRecalculation to get a fresh
copy of the web page. It could be the first one was retrieved before you
logged in.

Oh, I see.

Yes, I tried after closing & reopening Excel. Still didn't work. Web query was fine though. Got me thinking why don't I use those! I guess the functions are more flexible, build them into formulas etc. Easier than VBA?

I'm new to smf_Addin, so haven't found out how to use smfForceRelculation yet. I think I've found it in the FAQ now, but it's near my bedtime, so I'll let you know how I get on when I get some time.

Thanks again.

Decided not to go to bed yet!

I tried smfForceRecalc. No joy, stepping through the code I could see I seemed to be getting a login prompt, despite being logged into ADVFN in my Browser (Chrome?).

I tried another Web query, different table though. I got a different login prompt this time, a 'Windows' network type dialog, rather than the ADVFN browser login I got last time (within the web query window). I entered my id & pword into the Windowsy login & it worked. Brilliant!

Thanks again Randy, great to have the code as well.

Logging in with a different browser won't do the job. That's because the
add-in (and EXCEL Web Queries) uses the Microsoft Internet engine -- the
same one that IE uses. You need an IE security cookie in order for the
Microsoft Internet engine to be able to access the data if it's within a
secured area of the website.

I actually wrote the first add-in functions because of frustrations I ran
into using EXCEL Web Queries. They probably work much more reliably these
days. :)

OK. Here it is.

This version updates all rows in current selection (if any part of a
row is selected then the full row is updated).

It does all selected rows but it will stop if a blank symbol is found.

It works with selections of non-contiguous areas (ctrl-click selections).
A blank symbol will stop it only for that area (it will continue with
the next non-contiguous area in the selection).

This version also more accurately updates the status line.

---

If you are using version: 2.1.2011.04.03, and you want to use this mod,
then ...

Select all of the text in the attached modDownloadTable2.txt
In Excel goto the Developer tab and click on Visual Basic.
in the box on the left under the "RCH_Stock_Market_Functions", double
click on "modDownloadTable".
Then select all the text in the module (Ctrl-A) and paste in the new
text from modDownloadTable2.txt.

---

How to add buttons to your spreadsheet to call these routines...

Create a button in Excel (Developer/Insert/Form Controls: button).
Edit the button text to be something like "Reload All Quote Data",
Right click the button and "Assign Macro...", click NEW (or edit),
non-contiguous area selections
then in the ButtonX_Click() macro body add the line:
Application.Run "smfUpdateDownloadTable"
(see example below).

Add another button labeled "Load Selected Rows",
then in its ButtonX_Click() macro body add the line:
Application.Run "smfUpdateDownloadTableCurRow"

Examples:

Sub Button1_Click()
Application.Run "smfUpdateDownloadTable"
End Sub

Sub Button2_Click()
Application.Run "smfUpdateDownloadTableCurRow"
End Sub

It is OK by me if this code is added to the distribution.
