Re groups.io, 

Groups.io will host yoru group for FREE if you just start up the group and have the group members sign themselves up. Otherwise, there is an monthly (or annual) fee if you want groups.io to "relocate" your group from yahoo to groups.io. There is also an annual fee if the group's file size gets to be above 1GB. Message attachments are counted as data storage. 

Google Groups so far is free, and message attachments won't cause your free group to start to incur fees. 

I have started groups at both places (groups.io and google groups). My 2 cents opinion: I prefer google groups and if this were my group, I would choose to move the group there.
