It works, not exactly with an empty search. You need to enter a double asterisk.

You can get all stocks (more than 146k!!!) with:
http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup?s=**&t=S

All US stocks with:
http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup?s=**&t=S&m=US

Really good stuff.
I see the starting or landing page.
So, just trying to get my head around the process, can you give some direction on how to utilize SMF query to get all US Names-Tickers

I ahve used SMF to pull indidual stock quotes as well as finanical data, but not clear on how to pull down 71000 names into a spreadsheet.

Thanks,
Robb

That's why I said no easy way -- you'd have to grab them page by page, 20 at
a time.

Why do you even need them?

I know it sounds strange, but I am constructing a demonstration of the power of Excel as one way to demo some excel modeling to potential employer. It's usefulness to me is in illustrating how Excel can be used for the web and once data is pulled down.

In other cases, I like to do research on companies and funds for investing, which is more of a secondary objective for this example.

The first case is the usefulness of Excel, the secnd case, the intrinsic data is what I am after.

Hope this clarifies my creative endeavor.

Robb

I see no reason to know about all of the available companies for any of
those purposes.

You should use a simple screening product to determine which companies to do
further research on. There's no way you can do ANY research with the add-in
on 71000 companies. It's meant for ad hoc data retrieval, not for building
databases. Besides, the vast majority of those companies won't even have the
same data items available.

In any case, your general formula to get the ticker symbols would be
something like:

=RCHGetTableCell("http://finance.yahoo.com/lookup/stocks?s=**&t=S&m=US&r=&b="&B2,1,">Last
Trade",,,,C2)

...where B2 iterates as 0, 20, 40, etc (i.e. each page of 20 companies) and
C2 iterates from 1 to 20 within each iteration of B2 (i.e. the 20 companies
on each page).

However, the add-in only allows access to 1000 web pages per "session" (see
the smfForceRecalculation item in the "Links" area of the group for more
info), so you can't just create formulas for all 71000 companies in one
worksheet and get them all at one time. You would need to retrieve nearly
3600 web pages to get the data -- and that's going to be slow.

Help - Need Breakdown on ROE - Utilizing the Dupont Model

Hi all,

I am having an issue with the Morningstar Key ratios excel file.
I sometimes use it to get the various profitability ratios and how they have changed over time. Problem is that only have the worksheet wants to work right now.

I would love to have an excel spreadsheet that not only gets the metrics and ratios from this site, but the graphs as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Scott

Sorry, but MorningStar has been changing their pages to be dynamic delivery
of the data. The add-in extracts data from the source code of the web page,
so when it is dynamically displayed, the add-in no longer has access to the
data. You'll need to use a different source of the ratios.

As long as the image URL is under 99 bytes, you can bring in graphs using
the RCHCreateComment() function.

You'd have to go to the source of the data. For most elements, you can use
"Source" and "P-URL" in place of the ticker symbol in the
RCHGetElementNumber() function to get the general source and the specific
web page address that the data element is extracted from.

Randy is there any way to pull the CUSIP number using the RCHgettable function? I tried and am coming up with no results.

Best

Only if you have a data source that has the data in a table that the add-in
can extract the data from...

I had to use the smfGetTagContent() function on the QuantumOnline site
because they didn't have the data in an HTML table.

Recording each and every price stamp in a new row from a stream

Posted by: "Farhan Ansari" farhan86a@gmail.com   farsdocs

Tue Oct 4, 2011 3:01 am (PDT)

Hi all,

I had a query not related to the SMF Add-in (all praise to Randy and I
apologize to the group to ask an off topic question). But does any body know
how to record the data from a real-time steam. For e.g. the Google real-time
display of a stock price can be imported to Excel and with the auto-refresh
code the price can be made to appear updating on a real-time basis. However,
can there be any code in excel to auto record each and every price stamp in
a new row out of that stream?

Apologize again group and thanks.
