Have you looked at opening it from PPT VBA ... perhaps from a button?

The following thread talks about doing that and solves a problem someone was

When you open Excel via VBA, your Excel Auto_Open won't run, I don't think.
Instead, you can use the PPT VBA to jump to the right place in the Excel.

If you're using 2010, then it looks as though you can embed your spreadsheet
in your presentation, which might be another solution.
