Not sure if this is the right place for this; I'm being told by my IT people that this just cannot be done, so I'm looking for cleverer people that make it happen.
The problem: I have a number of computers in three separate computer labs in a high school environment (roughly 30 computers in each room). Students will sit at any of the computers on any given day and log in through the network.
I need the computer to have Excel2007 configured for the student when they log in:
- I have an Excel add-in which needs to added to the add-in list.
- macros need to be enabled (so the add-in works).
Up until now (Win XP), we created a default user which was configured as desired. When the student logs in the first time their account is created based on the default account. Apparently Windows 7 does not work this way and "there isn't any way to do it".
I have certainly established that the students cannot configure Excel when they log in. Well, they can eventually get it, but it takes 20 minutes of a 40 minute period:( The next time they come in they have to do it all over again - another half period gone.
One thing I tried: I thought maybe I could find registry entries corresponding to the Excel configuration settings, so I could write a program to update the registry when the student logs in. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything that looked like that; maybe someone knows where the settings are maintained?
I have a pretty extensive background in programming, but not much experience in system admin. If I need to do admin stuff, I will have to relay the information to my IT people and try and convince them to do it....
Googling around, it sounds like this is a big problem for colleges and schools with large computer labs where students log into various different computers at any time.
Looking forward to some ideas,
