Randy, I was going to ask - where is the smfFixLinks macro located.

But I found it in the "modUtilities" in VBA

Is there an easier way to force its execution than going into VBA and running it? Is there a hot key?

By the way it worked great on a problem I previously reported on bad links.

Thanks,
Kermit

Try the smfFixLinks macro when you have a workbook with unresolved links.

Ok, I´ll just use de C:\SMF Add-in location, that way I won´t have to worry if the windows OS is in spanish or english...

Thanks.

Or, on your spanish machine just put them in "c:\program files\SMF Add-in"
or whereever the exact directory was in your other machine. If you don't
have those directories just make them.

That way you wouldn't have to worry about changing the links in any of your
500 spreadsheets.

But, if you do want to change your spreadsheets, following Randy's location
suggestion is a good idea.

You can assign macros to toolbar buttons or give them keyboard shortcuts.
I've done both, but I use the button most often. Just do a Google search on
customizing the toolbar and you should find lot of examples.

I have about 6 custom buttons on my toolbar, as shortcuts to things I do
quite often that aren't part of the normal EXCEL. I also have a number of
custom buttons on my toolbar that are EXCEL tasks I do more often than
other people. For example, I do a lot "Group" and "Ungroup" operations,
which I don't think most people use at all.

The problem is that at work Windows is in spanish, and at home windows is in english... Originally my 500 spreadsheets were created at work (Spanish), so the links are in Spanish. And when I moved them to my home (English) I "resolved" the problem creating a spanish directory "C:\Archivos de Programa" and I lived happy for a couple of years...

So what´s the problem you ask?.

The problem is that yesterday, after having some problems with my work laptop they returned it with Windows 7 (I had Windows XP).. The OS is still in spanish so there shouldn´t be a problem. I saved the Add in the same "C:\Archivos de Programa" but for some reason my old worksheets were not working (broken link). After some "research" I realized that when I right click the SMF Add-In folder (or any folder in Arhivos de Programma) the path is in english "C:\Program Files"... You know what I mean?. The OS (all menues, everything) is still in spanish, but windows internally translates it to english(?).... Don´t know, but i guess that didnt happended in XP...So, the bottom line is that my worksheets dont work...

I tried to resolve this as I did at home, just creating a new
"C:\Archivos de Programa" folder, but as it already exists I cannot creat another one. Its stupid because the name of the file is in spanish, but internally Windows "sees" it in english.

So..... i was thinking of creating a new C:\SMF and avoid all this language stuff.... It will be hard work at the begginging, changing all my worksheets, but at least I wont have to worry about that the next time I change laptops.

Ahhh. I understand.

Win7 has localization features that XP did not - as you realize.

I think what might have happened is your new Win7 machine, although Spanish,
has localization options for English. This is why your spanish name for
Program Files is getting changed to the English one. It's just a theory - I
don't have a lot of experience with that.

Getting to a neutral directory might be the path of least resistance -
sorting out all the Win7 options is confusing.

Here's some clues about localization for that directory in Win7 in case you
wish to pursue that - you are not the only one having issues.

Pete, I just tried
=RCHGetElementNumber($E1, $A20)
Where $E1 was the symbol
And $A20 was the element

And it worked just fine.

What is GETDATA? It is not part of the add-in

Thanks Mike. I had been following that MSM thing, and had downloaded the
elements-1.txt file...still doesn't work. Most of the fixes do.

Appreciate the quick response! Save Randy a few minutes...

Then your work machine still doesn't have the updated elements-1.txt file in
the correct place.

Note the url address in the smfGetAParms function - it is moneycentral. The
current -1.txt file will have investing.money.msn.com like Randy provided in
the direct functions. And, what you got at home.

As Mike noted, you don't have the updated element definitions file. What
you're getting from the smfGetAParms() function is showing me the old
definition of the element.

However, I don't see how the third formula can possibly return a #NAME?
error if the second formula is working. It's the same formula wrapped into
the smfEval() function.

Good news. I deleted everything and installed again in the C:\SMF Add-In folder (as opposed to C:\Program Files\SMF Add-In) , as I said in another post, and it is all working fine. Maybe it had to do with the "language" issue I mendioned in the other post.

Anyway, thanks again.

Randy .... not being savvy with excel, I am lost when you say "you just press a button on your toolbar that runs the smfFixLinks macro that is part of the add-in" .... I don't see it on my excel tool bar or may be I am missing something??? .... do I need to create this button and if so, how? .... same is apparently true about smfForceRecalculation "button" .... is that something automatic or do I have to create it? .... Thanks in advance ....

They are something you have to create. You need to customize the toolbar.
Just do a Google search and you'll find lots of examples.

Industry element number pulling from Yahoo

Posted by: "futants46and2" futants46and2@yahoo.com   futants46and2

Hey Randy,

Is there an element number for industry from Yahoo? I looked through the elements list and couldn't find it. I also checked through the RCHGetYahooQuotes() function list and didn't find a code for Industry either.

I was using Zack's for industry, but it really slowed down my data pull, and I couldn't even startup my spreadsheet, with the Zack's link.Once I removed the Zack's links my data pull was flying. I already use elements pulled all from Yahoo, so I figure to keep the pulls homogeneous may be better instead of using another pull from MSN.

Thanks,
Elliot.

I see Mike already gave you the Yahoo element number.

You're correct that RCHGetYahooQuotes() doesn't have it. Yahoo chose not to
include it there.

The toughest thing about industry groups is just whose you want to use.
They can be very different.

For Zack's, you can speed it up significantly if you use their screener,
screen on stocks with a price greater than zero, and then just export the
results with the industry groups. Then use a VLOOKUP() on that exported
data.

You could do something similar with FinViz.

Randy, thanks for the help, that works! However, the live prices does not update unless I press the smfForceREcalculation button. Any idea as to how to get the prices to update live, or at least more frequently, maybe every 10 seconds or so.
Kind Regards,
Steve

Try:

=RCHGetTableCell("http://www.forexpros.com/indices/indices-futures",5,"us-30-futures")

You'd need to write your VBA timing routine for that.

The company description pulled by =RCHGetElementNumber (XX,1)does not seem to be working properly. Have I missed an update?

You need the new element definitions in smf-elements-1.txt from the "Works
in Progress" folder of the group's Files area. Exit EXCEL before updating
the file in your add-in folder.
