With Morningstar moving to dynamic web pages, I would suggest moving away
from using Morningstar data elements. I stopped using them some time ago.
The element is not working now because the URL is no longer valid.

Do you think that Morningstar is doing this on purpose so others
can't access the data?

Not really. I could still access the data if I used the HTML DLL, because
it allows JavaScript to run and then accesses the web page after everything
is resolved. However, the issue there is that it works differently
depending on which versions of IE and EXCEL someone has installed. So I
could get it to work with my particular combination of versions, but it
might not work for anyone else.

I replaced the 878 with 13865 (Yahoo) and it seems to work now.
You may want to build and elementnumber setup for marketwatch.com . There seems to be a lot of data there.

I'm assuming the spreadsheet you are putting on the blog requires the SMF add-in. Therefore, anyone opening it would need the SMF add-in installed. Not a likely possibility.
Chances of it working are slim to none.

I do upload spreadsheets to MS SkyDrive and they can be accessed via a browser (even if you do NOT have excel installed). BUT, you canNOT use VBA (and Randy's SMF Add In) at least using that tool. I simplify first, by cutting and pasting values and formatting, essentially removing all VBA access.
Here's an example of what you see:
http://www.sundognorth.com/TtP-S/?p=1089
Note that you can open it full screen, use it online, or download into your local excel. You might play with using it online; I think that may be the future...

For something with a table view like that...
If it were designed to be updated with the smfUpdateDownloadTable process,
it would still be viewable on-line. But if downloaded, it could be updated
by anyone that has the add-in on their computer.

Hi Randy,
First Thanks for all your hard work. You developed a great set of tools for investors.
I am having a problem getting the smf to work for downloading the Yahoo market statistics data (see SMF Photo 1 in the group Files>Misc section) - just getting the #NAME? error. I've read the location error in the links section and the cells appear to be looking for the add-in in the correct location on my computer but when I check the edit link function it says status "Unknown" (see SMF Photo 2). If I hit the "update" or "check status", it says status "OK" (see SMF Photo 3) but closing the dialogue box and reopening it the status changes to "Unknown" again.
I'm using Excel 2007 and Windows 7.
Regards,
Don

I agree that the locations appear to match. I guess the question is -- is
the add-in really location there? What do you get for:
=RCHGetElementNumber("Version")
When I go to "Edit Links" in EXCEL 2007 after opening an add-in workbook, I
also the the "Unknown" status.. But if I click on "Check Status" or
"Update", I get a response message of "Source is Open". If I immediately do
"Edit Links" again, it returns to "Unknown" until I do a "Check Status" or
"Update" again.

Hi Randy,
I was trying to duplicate the results of your element 15014 by using element 5526 / ( elemet 6586+ element 6206). The results I get do not agree for the symbols that I checked. Could you please let me know which elements or source of data that you used to calculate your element 15014 EBIT/(Working capital + fixed assets)
cheers
Darryl

I use elements 960, 964, & 10026:
# Element Source MMM Calc 15014 Magic Formula Investing --
Return on Capital Calculated 0.592638 -- 5526 Annual Income
Statement -- EBIT -- FY1 AdvFN-A 6217 0.429796 6586 Annual
Balance Sheet -- Equity and Liabilities -- Working Capital -- FY1
AdvFN-A 6799 -- 6206 Annual Balance Sheet -- Assets -- Net Fixed
Assets -- FY1 AdvFN-A 7666 -- 960 EBITDA YahooKS 7680000
0.592638 964 Total Cash YahooKS 5020000 -- 10026
Quarterly Balance Sheet -- Assets -- Net Fixed Assets -- FQ1 AdvFN-Q
7939 --
The MFI Yahoo group has a more complicated formula, which I've always
meant to go back and use. It matches the MFI web stie more closely. ROC
really isn't defined very well in the book, as I recall.

In Files, there is a template Excel file which retrieves changes in Analyst Estimates for specific companies by typing in the company ticker (SMF_Template_Yahoo_Analyst_Estimates.xls).
Can anyone help me find a template which retrieves changes in earnings estimates for the S&P500 index? Thanks kindly, Andrew
