Forward earnings estimates help

Hi Randy,

Is it possible to use either the RCHGetYahooData or RCHGetYahooHistory functions to return historical forward-looking earnings estimates from Yahoo Finance? I'm running a study and can't seem to figure out how to pull the historical data.

Thanks a lot for the great addon!

Yahoo wouldn't have such historical data, other than a quarter or two.

Best place I know of to get the historical estimates of earnings for
multiple years would be earnings.com:

http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&ticker=MMM

But not a straightforward extraction as the data can be a mix of the parent
corporation and its subsidiaries.

Another source would be StockScreen123.com, as they do have "point in time"
data back to 2001. However, they are not free (and just recently raised the
price). But getting the data out would be a chore. And one the add-in
wouldn't be able to help with.

You usually hear about problems. I wanted to tell you how great your tool is. It just keeps getting better and better.

Also, some of the things in making Files > Uploads by forum members > Money making worksheets are great uses of your tool. Is there any documentation for these available as I absolutely blown away by the speed of 1000 input tickers yahoo.

They aren't my workbooks, so I have no documentation available...

The speed is a result of only doing five RCHGetYahooQuotes() functions.
Each invocation of the function can return multiple data items for up to
200 ticker symbols with a single Internet access. The functions need to be
array-entered over a range instead of as individual cells in order to get
the speed, because otherwise each individual cell would require a new
access to the Internet for the data.

Element 1541 is from MSN. Maybe it's just me but after MSN's recent website
changes I must go to money.msn.com using Internet Explorer before using SMF.
Once I use IE to look at the website I can use SMF the rest of the day just
fine. The next day I must repeat. I am moving away from using MSN elements
as a result.

I don't get an error with your morningstar element. I am using the
2012.04.07 version with the updated -1.txt file same as you. Did you just
try rerunning it? It could have been a one-off retrieval problem.

Element 1541 is working fine here. I would suggest exiting and restarting
EXCEL to make sure all files are being loaded properly. If you replace the
smf-elements-1.txt file while you are in EXCEL, it doesn't load the new
definitions until you run smfForceRecalculation or exit and restart EXCEL.

The RCHGetTableCell() function isn't working probably because of your
search string:

">As\set Allocation"

Take out the backslash and it will work fine.

By the way, the "f1.grp..." URLs are just temporary ones generated by Yahoo
and usually don't work for long. The permanent link for the txt file would
be:

Thanks for the quick response. No clue how the \ got in the string. Corrected and now works.

I rebooted my Vista 64-bit machine with Excel2007 after submitting the email, reboot was not related to this issue. My Dell V305 color printer keeps getting lost. I know more info than you need.

The 1541 element still does not work FOR IBM. It works for CLS , DAR, EA, GAME, HEK, HWD, KWK, PBI, SIGM, UPL, XLS, GE, AAPL and many more but not IBM.

Any ideas why IBM is not working.

Thanks,
Kermit

No idea. IBM works fine here.

Could you have a bad cached page in the IE Temporary Internet Files area?
Do you have your Internet Options set to always get a fresh copy of a web
page?

Removing temporary or cache files

Does SMF or RCH functions create any temporary or cache files that may accumulate over time, consuming resources and which should be deleted periodically?

Yes and no. It does save copies of web pages, from which it extracts the
data. So they will certainly take up memory. However, purging them is an
all or nothing deal, using the smfForceRecalculation macro. I usually only
have one workbook open at a time, and run that macro when I close a
workbook (because all the pages I retrieved for it are no longer needed).

But running smfForceRecalculation when you have an open workbook with all
the same formulas won't reduce resources, as it would just get a fresh copy
of the web page to store.

Pete, 13862 comes from MSN. See all the messages recently about the changes
at MSN. In short, you need the new elements-1.txt file in the Works in
Progress folder.

13862 (company name) doesn't work at all when using the utility "GetData"
It's been down for several days now; I haven't delved into it because it
isn't critical. Is there something differenct about how GetData does it?
Thanks Randy!

Thanks Mike. I had been following that MSM thing, and had downloaded the elements-1.txt file...still doesn't work. Most of the fixes do.

Appreciate the quick response! Save Randy a few minutes...

I have no idea, since you didn't describe the problem. This works fine for
me:

=smfGetOptionQuotes("SPY May 2012 $140 Call","b")

Old spreadsheets dont work after re instalation

I recently had a problem with my laptop, and they had to change my hardrive , so when I got my laptop back I had to install again the SMF addin. I have Windows 7 and Excell 2007.

I know its installed correctly, because if a create a new spreadsheet and put the formula =RCHGetElementNumber("aapl",6266) it gives me 116371

However when I open my old spreadsheets all the formulas in the cells apears something like this ='C:\Program Files\SMF Add-In\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla'!RCHGetElementNumber("aapl",6266) and gives me the error #NAME?

Please help!.

Check the item in the "Links" area of the group related to location errors
and #NAME? errors.

Sounds like you installed the add-in in a different directory than you had
last time. You need to move the add-in or update your xls files to refer to
the new location.
