Just some explanation to the AdvFn data.
It seems that they are pulling their data off of Morningstar Reports if available BUT they are using "as of reporting" data feeds. The discrepancy usually comes with companies that restate their Financials.
I have been also looking on a better alternative to AdvFn data( I haven't had any luck on this yet). If anybody knows I would like to know too.

I am successfully using it on a Win 7 machine and the add-in works fine MOST of the time. It seems to have problems with internet cookies (I have IE 9 and Firefox) and I seem to need to always log-in through excel for subscription sites like Morningstar even if I have already logged in using through the browser.
Hope that helps.

I've been on Windows 7 for well over a year, and heavily use the Add-In. What symptoms are you having? I doubt that it has anything to do with Win 7. What version of Excel? I'm using 2007 and it works as expected...with dozens of spreadsheets.
I'd first try a complete new install of Randy's SMF, being CAREFUL to follow all the instructions. Then be sure that your spreadsheet points to the proper location of the addin (and making sure Excel knows where it is).

You have to login using IE, not Firefox. Excel uses IE.

And I actually recommend using the EXCEL Web Query version of IE to log in.
It appears with later updates that the browser version of IE and the Web
Query version of IE are different. So logging in with the browser version of
IE may not do the trick...

CEFConnect data

Mon Jul 4, 2011 10:04 am (PDT)
Randy
First let me thank you for sharing your great work with us. I am a frequent user of the SMF Add-in and really appreciate all it can do.
I am trying to figure out how to extract data from CEFConnect website as I try to follow a number of closed end funds. Although I use your add-in templates and examples a lot, my code writing skills are poor and I cannot figure out how to use RCHGetWebData or RCHGetTableCell to get the following values into my spreadsheet:
Basic URL ---- http://www.cefconnect.com
Fund Basics Tab Distribution Tab Portfolio Characteristics Tab
Ticker Effective Lev Total Expense Current Dist Avg EPS Avg UNII ROC AMT Avg Duration
I want to be able to enter Ticker Symbols such as NUV, IQT, etc into the first column in my spreadsheet, and have the add-in return the values for Effective Leverage, Total Expense, Current Distribution, Avg EPS, Avg UNII, AMT and Avg Duration.
I uploaded a 4 slide powerpoint file (CEFConnect.ppt) in the Files/Requested Samples section that shows where each data field is on CEF Connect.
Any guidance on how to get the data would be appreciated. Again, thanks for all you contribute.

It seems to be fairly straight-forward usage of the RCHGetTableCell()
function. For example:
=RCHGetTableCell("http://www.cefconne ct.com/Details/ ",1,"EffectiveSummary.aspx? ticker=NUV
Leverage (")
=RCHGetTableCell("http://www.cefconne ct.com/Details/ ",1,"CurrentSummary.aspx? ticker=NUV
Distribution (")

Thanks for the quick response. When I do a copy of the formulas in your reply and paste them into Excel they work great. However, when I tried to get other data or even just type in your exact formula I get "Error". I am running Win7 64 and 2010 Version of Excel.
Is there something I need to change or download to make this work?
Other SMF functions I use work fine.
Thanks again

They don't have well-formed HTML tables, so the normal functions aren't
going to be of much help. You could do manual parsing of the data, but it
would probably be more pain than it's worth.

I typically just use the smfPricesByDates() function to get the prices for
the given dates. Because the prices being returned are adjusted for splits
and dividends, you should get a total return.

How can one get the historical dividend data from Yahoo?..for example..the data shown for ABT at:

Hello Randy,
I just read the documentation at:

And I see no mention of retrieving the historical dividend data via the RCHGetYahooHistory function.
These are the available fields it lists:
possible values within the character string:
"T" = Ticker symbol
"D" = Ending date of the period
"O" = Opening price of the period
"H" = High price for the period
"L" = Low price for the period
"C" = Closing price for the period
I see no reference to historical dividend data.
Pls advise..thanks.

Different parameter:
--------------------- ---------
*Period*= Type of data period to retrieve; optional; defaults to "d";
possible values:
"d" = Daily quotes
"w" = Weekly quotes (Yahoo chooses to use the first trading day of the
week as the end of the period)
"m" = Monthly quotes (Yahoo chooses to use the first trading day of the
month as the end of the period)
"v" = Dividend history ("T" is the only "Data Item" that makes a
difference – Date and Dividend amount are automatic)
--------------------- ---------
For example:
=RCHGetYahooHistory("MMM",,, ,,,,"v")
...returns:
Date Dividends 2011-05-18 $0.55 2011-02-16 $0.55 2010-11-17 $0.53
2010-08-18 $0.53 2010-05-19 $0.53 2010-02-17 $0.53 2009-11-18 $0.51
