I agree that it should have been adjusted on the ex-dividend date. I don't
think their data provider is as diligent on mutual funds as they are on
stocks.

Your best course would be to note the problem to Yahoo...

Randy, are there alternative sources that I can retrieve the adjusted close for mutual funds besides Yahoo Finance, you recommend?

I keep track of several thousand mutual funds. Would be nice to have an alternate source when something like this happens.

As for the mutual fund data source that Y Finance use, it says they use Morningstar. When you go to Morningstar, their site shows the adjusted close (ie. FCNTX and FBDIX). I'm thinking it's probably a Yahoo Finance thing.

I think all of the historical quotes come from CSI, not MorningStar.

Where are you seeing adjusted closes on MorningStar? I wasn't aware they
carried historical quotes.

Morningstar doesn't have historical data. I was looking at the charts on Morningstar and they do reflect the total return, not price return.

You're probably right about the CSI's historical data.

In my experience there is no free lunch when it comes to obtaining
accurate price data that is adjusted for dividend and capital gains
distributions.  You either have to pay for good quality data or live
with the shortcomings of free data provided by Yahoo.  A 2-4 week delay
in adjusting closing prices is not uncommon for Yahoo.
Here is an outfit that is supposed to have high quality price adjusted
mutual fund data.  I have no personal experience with them.
http://www.fasttrack.net/
I usually go to a mutual funds web site to determine whether
distributions have actually occurred.  Mutual fund distributions will be
large this year, and the price adjusted data on Yahoo is like to be
distorted in the short term.

Which is the best web site to see how a stock is traded?

I haven't a clue what you're asking.

Please explain what you mean by "Traded"?

Are you looking for volume, price, short trades, long trades, something else?

Are you looking for intraday trades, pre-market, post-market?

Anyone have any experience with any data vendors that would provide reliable data for a fee/subscription?

Hello -

I use both the S&P Capital IQ Excel plugin and the smf_addin extension to get live data feeds into my Excel tracking spreadsheets, and I'd like to be able to get historical price data for the S&P 500 Total Return index in order to use it as a benchmark against the time-weighted IRR for my portfolio. The best the CapIQ plugin can do is provide the S&P 500 Price return (not including dividends) data. So I've been trying to figure out if I can get the Total Return data through the smf_addin.

What I'd like to be able to do is reference a date and have the formula return the historical price of the S&P 500 Total Return index on that date. Since my portfolio returns include cash flows from dividends, I'd like the benchmark I use to include them as well so that the comparison is apples to apples. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm stumped.

Thanks,

Billy

Do you have a source of the S&P 500 Total Return index? Yahoo doesn't carry
the historical data, as far as I know.

When I want to compute total return over a range of dates, I typically just
grab adjusted prices from Yahoo using the smfPricesByDates() function. I
think SPY would be a more relevant benchmark, because it is something you
actually could have invested in. And, to me, the whole point of a benchmark
is what you *could* have done if you had invested passively.

In any case, SPY doesn't help if you need date ranges that extend beyond
the inception of SPY.
