Thanks for the comment, but cutting does not remove the source rows - it just empties the cells.
I've done some more experimenting and I now see that the problem has nothing to do with filtering. If you select the cells in, say, rows 2 and 4, you cannot cut them, and you get the same error message
The command you chose cannot be performed on multiple selections
However, you can select rows 2 and 4, right click and chose Delete. That deletes just the selected rows, and the remaining rows move up to fill in the empty rows.
I Googled the error message and found a page where someone asked the same question about why copy works but cut doesn't. He was answered by someone who said, in effect, that's the way it works.
