Hi Randy,
Thanks for it, I already knew these tickers.
But are there more to find?
Thanks,

I've got data gaps all over the place with yahoo finance now. The last few weeks have been awful. Yahoo must bee falling apart internally. Maybe we should switch to "Google Fiance" for data?

Adjusted Closes
Posted by: "lexstar" lexstar@yahoo.com lexstar

I have used smfPricesBetween() to retrieve the adjusted OHLC prices for a basket of mutual funds (1000 tickers) dating from 2005 to today. These prices are downloaded onto one separate worksheet (call it Worksheet #1).
Then I created another worksheet (Wksheet #2) to retrieve the data from this Wksheet #1. All desired calculations are done on Wksheet #2.
To avoid having Excel take such a long long time to calculate everything I press SHFT+F9 on Wksheet #1, I made all the data from year 2005 to 2011 static (by copying and pasting just the Values). That leaves on year 2012 with the smfPricesBetween() formula still intact so that it would download the OHLC data faster.
While I've solved one problem (to make it download the OHLC data faster), I've created another problem.... whenever there's a dividend or split, the OHLC must be adjusted. But all my data from year 2005 to 2011 are now static and fixed.
This is creating a huge headache for me. Can anyone help? I want to be able to use the LATEST adjusted OHLC prices for these basket of 1000 mutual fund symbols, but I also don't want to take several days just to download those data.
I thought about downloading the dividends along with the OHLC prices and then figure it out into an Adjustment Factor, but then I'm wondering how accurate it would be because of possible rounding errors, etc.
Any thoughts on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

But how are you going to download the LATEST adjusted OHLC prices each month for a list of 1000 mutual fund symbols?

Let's take a step back -- why do you need all of those prices? What are you
using them for?
For me, the whole point of getting the latest prices is to get the
adjustments in them. It wouldn't help to have to update an "adjustments
file" independently, because you'd still need to do it for the 1000 tickers.
But that much data is NOT what the add-in was designed for. Sounds like you
should be going to some type of screening product if you're trying to
create some type of database.

1. I want to do a few backtest comparing adjusted prices vs. non-adjusted prices.
2. Do you recommend any filtering/screening product you're talking about? Some of the ones I've looked at in the past doesn't provide the necessary data I need.

I don't do anything with mutual funds -- it appears all of my mutual fund
screener bookmarks are either extinct or significantly changed...
But my original question remains -- what are you doing with all the prices?
For example, if you need 1-year, 2-year, and 5-year returns, those wouldn't
change even if prices are adjusted. So, once set, they would never need to
be updated.

Re: Stockcharts - Custom Charts - Issue with getting update with new
Posted by: "jmkbfitz12" jmkbfitz12@yahoo.com jmkbfitz12
Sat Feb 25, 2012 11:07 am (PST)
Randy,
thanks for the help. The concatenate function and the image URL are working. I'm running into issue using the charts in the visible vs "hidden" mode.
In one file, I'm using the chart with the comment hidden where it appears when your mouse is over it. That works fine and updates each day with the correct "customizations" with the stockcharts chart. I'm using:
=RCHCreateComment("http://stockcharts. com/c-sc/ "&N5&"&p=D&b=sc?s= 5&g=0&i=p9557693 6993&r=3349" ,99,,,,,50)
However, in another file, I want to be able to print out the charts so have them setup to be visible. For some reason, if I update the file the following day, the stockcharts will return to the default stockcharts chart (i.e with RSI and MacD vs having the customized variables that should show up). If I go to stockcharts and pull the image URL, it seems to be changing each day even though the same chart settings are the same. So the URL that I have in the formula isn't "up-to-date" and refers back to the default stockchart format.
=RCHCreateComment("http://stockcharts. com/c-sc/ "&N5&"&p=D&b=sc?s= 5&g=0&i=p9557693 6993&r=3349" ,99,,,1,, 50) N5 is the reference to the ticker symbol.
For the "visible" sheets, I also have to use the ctl-shift R on each page (which has six charts) each to get them updated. In the non-visible formula, they all update w/o issue on file wide ctl-shift R.
Any ideas why having the "visible" flag highlighted would raise issue while the hidden would work fine?
I have a workaround where I have the stockcharts latest URL as a variable and reference that in the chart formula's but it takes time to get the latest url and paste in.
Thanks much...

Hidden vs Visible shouldn't make any difference. That's a property of the
comment box, not of the image. The image is just a background image for the
comment box.
Multiple sheets can be a problem -- the function is using a loophole left
by Microsoft, because a function should NOT be able to change anything in
the worksheet that is outside its domain. But the function does work on the
active sheet only. So when you open up a workbook, only the active sheet
should be getting an update.
I'm not sure what to say about the images reverting...

I'm pretty sure the yahoo finance data system is dying. I've been unable to get coherent and reliable strings of stock quotes (Daily Close and Historical batches) from them for weeks now. Google has finally won I suppose.
Can't beat'em; might as well join them.
This is a plea for an "smf-google" alternative for stocks. I've noted there is documentation for google options; not for stocks yet. I also noted an "attachment" project for google finance for "stocks" that is "hung-up;" and appears very frustrating to figure out.
I'm no programmer; but I'm happy to supplement someone's "hobby interests" via a gift certificate for a working SMF spreadsheet copy that retrieves the NAZ 100 individual stocks "Adjusted Close" for Daily and Historical quotes for the last year or so via Google Finance.
You guys are so far above my "pay grade" I'll never catch up. It would probably take one of you "whiz-kids" about 10 mins of "coffee-time" effort to solve this one.
Have mercy on someone who remembers IBM punch cards as state of the art.
Best,
Charles

For my purposes, I don't see Google as an alternative. I just pulled up
some MMM data. It is NOT adjusted for dividends. Also, I see a number of
days where the reported volume is zero. On those days, OHLC are all the
same -- obviously bogus.
Besides, all you need to do to get the historical quotes from Google right
now is something like:
=smfGetCSVFIle("http://www.google. com/finance/ historical? q=IBM&startdate= Feb26,
2001&enddate=Feb 25, 2012&num=30& output=csv" )

Randy, do you have any suggestions as alternatives in case something does happen to Yahoo (or it gets worse than it presently is)?

Thanks Randy,
The problem is I need mutliple stock quote downloads; not the single downloads from your example. I'm unconcerned about dividends, splits, etc, I only need closing prices for the entire Naz 100 each and every night. It would take a very long time to get historic downloads for all of these.
My offer stands for your SMF accolytes if they are up up it.
Thanks,
Charles

Not really. MSN does have historical quotes as well, but with limited
history. If you go beyond a certain range, it gives you weekly instead of
daily quotes.
It all depends on what the quotes are being used for. A paid vendor might
be the best way to go.

Do you have any paid vendor recommendations? I am interested in daily/weekly/monthly data of US securities going back 2-3 years, adjusted for dividends obviously..

And those bogus closing prices on days with zero volume are acceptable?
So you're saying you just need 100 vectors of closing prices? That
shouldn't take too long to get. You could use something like this to just
get the closing prices column:
=INDEX(smfGetCSVFIle("
http://www.google.com/finance/ historical? q=IBM&startdate= Feb26,
2001&enddate=Feb 25, 2012&num=30& output=csv" ,,200,6), ,5)

It's a possibility. But the extraction would be messy.

I haven't look at paid vendors for well over a decade.
When QuotesPlus shut down a month or so ago, the AmiBroker forum had a few
people looking for new vendors. If I remember correctly, some of those
mentioned -- Norgate, HGSI, Pinnacle Data, ...

Thanks,
Obviously Google has some problems too. I'm just concerned Yahoo is falling apart. Look what happened to MSN Money a while back. Totally changed now.
Thanks again,
Charles
