Dear Randy,
I've been successfully using =smfGETOptionQuotes((A19&" "&F19&" "&G19&" "&H19&" "&C19),"a",,$J$3) to retrieve options quotes.
A19 contains the symbol; F19 the month; G19 the year; H19 the strike; C19 either Call or Put; and $J$3 is "Y" for Yahoo.
I'm now trying to get options data for weekly options: I see from the documentation on the smfGetOptions Quotes function that the Expiration period can be expressed in several ways -- either 6 or Jun for a monthly expiration -- or m/d for an actual month and day expiration. I'm thinking that I'll need to use the m/d to retrieve weekly data, since W doesn't specify which week, yes ??
For an example say I want to get the Ask for HLF Call at $63 expiring on May 23
If I change the F19 designation to a Jun or 6 it works fine. If I change the F19 to a 6/21 it also works fine. However, when I change the F19 to a 5/23 I get a N/A error.
The Yahoo option page does show a May 23 Call for May 23 with an ask of $0.95, so Yahoo has the data.
Is there anything I need to do differently ??
I've also noticed that Yahoo shows different expiration dates for the 'normal39; third week expiration options as compared with other weekly expirations. For example the 3rd friday of June is June 20 -- Yahoo shows the expiration as saturday June 21. However, for other than the third week options Yahoo uses the actual friday -- thus the options expiring on Friday June 13 are shown as expiring on that very day -- June 13.
Any guidance on how to deal with these differing ways of showing the expiration date ??
Thanks, as always,
Stan Sztaba

Instead of using both month and year there (and now you'll need day for
weekly options), I just use a single cell with an EXCEL serial date.
Then you can use the TEXT() function to format it when you do your
concatenations. For example, if cell F19 contained a serial date, the two
date portions could be created with:
=TEXT(F19, "m/d yyyy")

The "W" and "W1" mean the same thing. So:
=smfGetOptionQuotes("HLF W1 2014 $63.00 Call","b")
=smfGetOptionQuotes("HLF W 2014 $63.00 Call","b")
...would both get you the first weekly expiration. I usually have a column
to retrieve the expiration date if I do it that way, so I have a
confirmation of the date.

When you get an "N/A" value returned, it's because that is what Yahoo is
posting. That's not something the add-in generates for an error situation.

Usually one of two typical issues:
1. You have your Internet Option set up to cache web pages instead of
always getting fresh content.
2. You need to use the smfForceRecalculation function to force the add-in
to grab a fresh copy of the web page. Otherwise, it extracts data from its
own saved copy of the web page.
Yahoo usually starts the day with "N/A" values, so if those two things
aren't taken care of, you'll be extracting the same "N/A" value all day
long, from either an IE or an add-in saved web page. Fixing the two issues
above means you should always get a fresh copy of the web page from the
Internet.
I've also noticed that Yahoo shows different expiration dates for the

This is something I need to revisit soon. I think the CBOE is fixing that
"out of sync" issue. The monthly expiration date in the January of 2016
LEAP is now a Friday date. I believe in 2016 and forward, they are using
Fridays for the monthly expiration date, so they will look just like the
weekly options.
Remember that TEXT() function example I gave earlier? I sometimes use the
smfGetOptionExpiry() function in that cell to give me my expiration dates
as EXCEL serial date values. For example:
...the next monthly expiration date:
=smfGetOptionExpiry() =smfGetOptionExpiry(,,"M")
...and the next weekly expiration date:
=smfGetOptionExpiry(,,"W") =smfGetOptionExpiry(,,"W1")
...and the week after that:
=smfGetOptionExpiry(,,"W2")
I wrote that before they added the additional weekly options, so adding
more weekly identifiers is another thing I need to address in that
function. I was going to update it when I'm sure of what they are doing in
2016. One other issue with that function is the dates given on the
expiration date. So I sometime just hard-code my dates.
Another function I use is to actually retrieve the available expiration
dates. For example, this function array-entered over a multi-row range:
=smfGetOptionExpirations("HLF","OX")
...right now returns these dates:
2014-05-23
2014-05-30
2014-06-06
2014-06-13
2014-06-21
2014-06-27
2014-07-19
2014-08-16
2014-11-22
2015-01-17
2016-01-15
You can even have it return the option symbols if you like. For example,
this:
=smfGetOptionExpirations("HLF","OX","C",63)
...returns smfGetOptionQuotes() ticker symbols for those same dates for
calls at the $63 strike price:
HLF 5/23 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 5/30 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 6/6 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 6/13 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 6/21 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 6/27 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 7/19 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 8/16 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 11/22 2014 $63.00 Call
HLF 1/17 2015 $63.00 Call
HLF 1/15 2016 $63.00 Call

Thanks, Randy,
I'll have to study your response further. I wouldn't mind hardcoding the dates, but that bring us back to the question of which date -- friday or saturday.
Thanks

Unfortunately, you'd need to know whether it was a normal monthly, or a
weekly. If indeed the CBOE is changing that in 2016, it will become a
non-issue.
For other methods, you may want to review this item from the "Tips and
FAQs" area:
