Thanks for your help, Randy. This procedure does run the macro (after I remove the highlighted area). Strange that this macro worked with the highlighted area prior to my reinstallation - and still does on my other computer. DId you notice if the macro ran on your without removing the highlighted area selected?
All the best and thanks for a wonderful tool that you have been sharing with the world.

I got the error if I left your highlighting on, but it worked fine when I
took it off.
You may have a different version of the add-in on your other computer. The
ability to highlight a range was added on 2014-05-01, so you'd need a
version released after that date to have the functionality.
Are you sure the "reinstallation" wasn't done with a later version of the
add-in than what you had originally?

Hi Randy. An interesting note on the selected area. I back tested using the 1-30-2014 version of the smf addin and it worked. Something must have changed in the 5-25-2014 version.

Yup. The highlighting capability was added on 2014-05-01, so it wouldn't
have been in the 2014-01-30 version.

Hello Randy,
I love these 3 spreadsheets, very useful.
Question on the spreadsheet, http://ogres-crypt.com/SMF/Templates/SMF-Template-Morningstar-Stock-Data.xls http://ogres-crypt.com/SMF/Templates/SMF-Template-Morningstar-Stock-Data.xls.
On the Morningstar website, stock, valuation tab, there is a column to the right, that list the 5 year average pe ratio.
Here is the link:

Do you know what the rchgetelemntnumber for the Morningstar 5 year average pe ratio on the Morningstar valuation tab? I would like to use it to do a quick equation, fv eps x avg pe = fv.
Thanks,

The current valuation web page on MorningStar hasn't been converted to
element numbers yet. Let me see if I have some time later today. It
shouldn't take long.

Randy, I am not a very sophisticated stock buyer. I have read several books on buy and hold eg..Buffett.
The one thing that seems to consistent in all the books is to buy stocks below their 10 or 5 year pe ratio average.
So you can understand why Morningstar valuation tab is important to investors like me, the simple buy and hold strategy buyers.
I do not know how trade stocks, so my strategy is to buy and hold 3 - 5 years then sell, and then buy and hold something else that has potential???
I do not know if this will be smart and effective tactic, but at least I am trying.
As a retiree, my first pick was Exelon EXC utility. It is a disaster, so I am going to try and buy some other dividend stocks, with less risk, stocks below their 5 year pe average??
I hope it works.
Thank you. Have a great day, great weekend.

Why did you pick EXC in the first place? A summary score of analysts put it as bearish, and the long term trend line is down. Buying and holding a loser is exactly that: a loser. Find something, anything, better. I think you may be better off in a mutual fund such as OAKLX, FLCSX, or FVDFX.

Hi
I am building a stock sheet, which takes the data from different pages. but the sheet seems to be getting slower and slower. There is quite a bit of data and a few calculations afterwards. does anyone else experience waiting time? and what is normal waiting time?:)
Is it fastest to get data with GetElement, or to get a whole page, for example future valuation, and then rearrange the data myself?:)
Best regards Caspar

The biggest bottleneck is typically the number of Internet accesses you
need to do to get the data. If you need different web pages for each ticker
symbol, and you have a lot of ticker symbols, it's going to take a lot of
time.
It does take longer if you have a large web page and extract a large number
of items from it. But that overhead is typically relatively small compared
to retrieving the web page in the first place.
One issue I've seen in the past is people using the RCHGetYahooQuotes()
function on a cell by cell basis, and making the functions volatile. That
means ALL of them need to do an Internet access every time something
changes in the workbook. The typical solution there is to use an
array-entered RCHGetYahooQuotes() function, so that Yahoo can create a
single CSV file with all the necessary data, in a single Internet access.
If you are using something like RCHGetElementNumber() or RCHGetTableCell()
to get a number of data items off the same web page, it only needs to
retrieve the web page once. The add-in recognizes that they data all come
from that same web page.

need to do to get the data.

I Tried something else, I installed all updates to Office 2010 from the Microsoft webpage (more than 40) and I managed to get RCHGetElementNumber to work.
I am attaching a worksheet.
There SYMBOL_1 (SLW) & SYMBOL_2 (CREE) were done a month ago with the same computer but using office 2007.
Symbol_3 (SLW) was created after installing office 2010 and the updates, with the results you can see.
I use Zacks and Yahoo a lot and those are the pages that return most Errors.
Anyway I understand it is very difficult to diagnose this, and as you suggested I can use RCHGetTableCell() function to get the same data, or use other Element# from Barchart or Morningstar, that work OK
Again thanks a lot for all your help, I'll keep trying to fix this and I will let you know if I get lucky.
