Do a search on the message archives and you should find a discussion on

I will hijack this thread...

I feel so ignorant but since I can't figure it out I need to ask
or remain ignorant.

Where do I search the archives? Obviously I don't understand all
there is to know about Yahoo Groups...

Thanks,

Bill

I've followed the threads regarding this problem, I think I'm up to speed. I used Randy's prefix in the SMF Add-In folder, and that worked until yesterday. Now all the Advfn references in the RCHGetElementNumber command return an error (but the google references work fine). So I re-installed the SMF Add-In, including the prefix file, but I'm still getting errors. When I checked the Advfn website, their data is still there. I'd use the google commands exclusively, but the Advfn data goes back farther and provides quarterly cash flow data that google does not.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas how to fix it? TIA.

I'm not really even looking at it at this point, because it changes every
day. Better to wait until things settle down and get finalized. Especially
since the "Beta" version we've been shown has a completely different set of
line items.

The "ih" prefix stopped working because they changed "mode=" to "btn=" in
the parameters.

Their regular website web pages for quarterly results still don't work,
even just using a browser.

Thanks for confirming, wasn't sure if I was making some esoteric mistake. I saw that their non-beta pages only go to Q1-2013, but was hoping (for the 4th week in a row now) that this was a sign that they're converting to their new pages. I can combine the google commands with get table cell from gurufocus tables for the quarterly cash flow data.

Thanks again, and for all that you do.

Randy,

I was going to ask you about this problem and when it might be fixed as well but I see you have answered it already somewhat.

I have most of my spreadsheets tied to the ADVFN site so I would eventually like to get this resolved.

When their website settles down and looks like it is done, will you be adjusting the smfgetADVFNElement function to work as before?

I would rather wait and not change my entire spreadsheet if it can be done in a month or two. I would probably spend half that time fixing all the work I have done so far switching to something else.

I could switch to Yahoo but that is only 3 years of data.

Luckily I had a backup Financial page copied for just something like this. I spent forever manually entering data before I discovered your add-in program. Thanks so much.

I know how much work this has to be and I don't envy you.

Any other work around you might suggest? My sheet will function but not update any new financials but earning season is over for now so I have some time to wait.

Tom

Part of my problem is that I'm not sure smfGetAdvFNElement() *can* work as
before. The new "beta" page I've seen is a completely different structure
of line items. They are mostly the raw data items, like "Cash &
Equivalents", but none of the useful ratios. I'm sure the ratios can be
derived, but that's a whole new level of understanding and processing. It
depends so much on exactly what was being used from the AdvFN page.

GuruFocus does have 10 years of data. For example:

=RCHGetTableCell("http://www.gurufocus.com/financials/MMM",1,"except for
per share",">Free Cash Flow")

But you do need to be logged in with an IE security cookie. And premium
members have more line items available to them.

I've already switched over to GuruFocus. I think the ADVFN changes are not an improvement. Not sure what they were trying to accomplish.

I have just advanced to the SMGUpdateDownloadTable Macro - and
I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure it out.

I have the table set up and the macro works well for most
elements - however I don't seem to get results from the following
elements:element 1 (MSN company Description), element 13862 (MSN
company name)element 13863 (YahooKS company name)
1 - returns "#value" result but works with
=rchgetelementnumber(A2,1)13862 - returns a blank and returns
error with =rchgetelementnumber(A2,13862)13863 - returns "error"
but works with =rchgetelementnumber(A2,13863)

Using Excel 2010 on Windows 7
Thanks for any input.Bill

Element #1 will never work with smfUpdateDownloadTable. The macro uses the
VBA EVAL() function, which can't handle strings over 1024 bytes.

Element #13862 worked fine for me (using ticker symbols MMM and JNJ).

Element #13863 uses an old method of element definition, so the
smfUpdateDownloadTable process can't handle it properly. It's really an
easy fix, too. The current element definition is:

Evaluate;Company Name;smfStrExtr(smfGetTagContent("
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=~~~~~","title"),"Summary for ","-");;;;;;;;;0

...and the new method that smfUpdateDownloadTable can work with is:

Evaluate;Company Name;=smfStrExtr(smfGetTagContent("
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=~~~~~","title"),"Summary for ","-");;;;;;;;;0

That "=" at the front of the 3rd parameter tells the macro that the element
is an EXCEL-type function, so it handles it differently than a text string.
Basically, it just changes the column definition to be:

smfStrExtr(smfGetTagContent("http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=~~~~~","title"),"Summary
for ","-")

...which is the manual work-around I had been suggesting before I added the
"=" tag so I could identify them. I eventually would like to change all
element definitions to saved functions like that, using the "=" prefix...

Thanks for the info Randy. Since I'm not quite up to speed on
this programing stuff I won't pretend to understand the last
part.I think the bottom line is that its a programming fix -
albeit and easy one.

I understand that "1" won't work.

13862 still isn't working for me. I upload a file and i hope it's
in the right place - but I'm not sure. Its in "All Files" I
didn't see a way to upload into "Attachments" Sorry if I messed
that up. the file name is

2013-08-28 - SMF stock query.xlsm

If you get a chance maybe you can let me know what I'm doing
wrong...

Thanks again!

Bill

The new site is disappointing IMO. Heres a peek at FTR:
