Looks to me like you have a space in front of the ">" in the formula...

Actually, I also find the "Symbol" and "Stocks" search terms iffy. Those
are pretty common words that could show up on the page at any time, in any
location. You really do need to use search terms that are as unique as you
can get them -- hence my adding the end or start of the HTML tags.

That tells you that that is the cell you're in when your search terms are
done finding things. It's from there that you are skipping rows and
columns. Is that where you WANT to be after finding all your search terms?
Does skipping 2 rows down and then taking the 8th column of that row get
you to what you want to extract?

Aaargh I wish I could understand the functionaility behind this more....feels rubbish asking such "simple" questions :/

The date format is coming out as 01/30/12.

Is there any way to change the format to 30/01/2012 ??

Changing the cell formatting does not do this so it must be written into the vba coding?

Perhaps this one is different but often when a date comes back it's in text
form. That you can't change the format supports that.

So, to get a date format you can create a new cell/column and use
=DATEVALUE(orig text cell) and then manipulate the new cell.

You can also use text functions to rearrange in the new cell - like TRIM,
LEFT, TEXT and such. Google has many fine examples of these sorts of
functions.

Ah, yes, it looks like it returns DD-HH:MM the day and time - not a date.

You can manipulate that with excel text functions if you wish. Or even
smfWord like

=smfWord(cell,1,"-") to extract just the day
=smfWord(cell,2,"-") for the time

Mate you are looking at that from an intraday perspective.

If you change the period to daily (rather than 30 minute data for example) you will see that it does return a date....I just can't fathom how to change the formatting of this output to dd/mm/yyyy ???

Did you try:

=TEXT(F9,"YYYY-MM-DD")

You won't be able to change what that returns as the date in column F is an
extract from a longer string in column D.

SMF is extracting data from the website - are their logon settings where you
can set date preferences? I think thats the only way apart from creating a
new column and making the date as you wish it to appear (like with TEXT or
other methods).

Lol silly iphone - didn't mean my last message to start with:

"Mate you are looking at that from an intraday perspective."

Should have said "maybe" :)

I will have to find another workaround for this as that did not work either.

Thank you for your efforts Mike.

It's not VBA. That's what they have the dates coded on the web page. It's a
string value in your worksheet, not an EXCEL date value, which is why
changing a format doesn't do anything to how it is displayed. If you need
it in another format, or want to convert it into an EXCEL serial date,
you're going to have to manually manipulate it.

RCHGetTableCell WSJ website

Tue Jan 31, 2012 10:07 am (PST)

I am trying to use the RCHGetTableCell function to pull in data from the WSJ Market Data Center. http://online.wsj.com/mdc/public/page/marketsdata.html?

I tried using the Documentation provided but I can't get it to work.
I'm trying to pull in several different things from this page but I just get errors. If some one could show me how to get the Advancing share volume on the NYSE under the markets diary section it would be a huge help.

The Advancing/Declining data in the Markets Diary section is within an image
- not in text. So SMF cannot access it.

Yes, the page contains lots of tables filled with images.

Do a search on the word "Advancing" - you won't find it. Thus, you can't
extract it with SMF.

There are elements defined for those data items, coming from Yahoo and
Barchart. See the templates in the files area...

Different sources do report different numbers, because they do some
filtering. For example, new highs and new lows are distorted if you report
both the 3x Ultra and 3x Inverse ETFs. And, typically, bond funds will be
on the opposite side of stocks. So there are some things that should be
removed from the statistics.

But, as Mike noted, the URL you give has the data in an image. See if you
can cut and paste one of the amounts.

Re: New official release of the add-in -- version 2.1.2012.01.30

You should exit EXCEL. Then just download the new ZIP and extract it on top
of the old files, replacing them as needed. When you go back into EXCEL,
the new version should load up from the new files automatically. To check,
you can try this function:

=RCHGetElementNumber("Version")

You should see something like:

Stock Market Functions add-in, Version 2.1.2012.01.30 (C:\SMF Add-in; 1)

The main thing you want to see is the new version number. The other items
are informational for my purposes.

Re: hi:   quotes-plus replacement, fundamental data, local database

Hi Leif,

I am also in the ongoing process of finding a replacement to Quotes-Plus. I've sent dozens of emails to many different vendors... many of whom have part of the solution but none have it all.

For fundamental data (which seems more difficult to come by) it's looking like XLQ with AAII might work (http://www.qmatix.com/XLQ.htm). Requires a subscription to AAII. (http://www.aaii.com/store/sipro)

Reuters Datalink also might be a good solution, but I haven't tried it yet and their sales team didn't know if they had excel connectivity.
http://www.equis.com/products/endofday/reutersdatalink/?overview

Their more expensive real-time feed (QuoteCenter) definitely has excel abilities, but I don't think the data is stored locally.
Here are the data fields (http://www.equis.com/products/brochures/MKWDatafields.pdf)

High Growth Stock Investor (HGSI) (http://www.highgrowthstock.com/Software/database.htm) Used to be powered by quotes-plus but has since built their own database. Not sure how their data is stored but if it is in metastock format or ACSII then the smf_addin might be able to read it into excel. Also HGSI said they are planning on building an Excel addin in the next 6 months.

If you end up testing any of these please post your experience here, I'd be interested in hearing about any solutions you find.

My Excel file stopped working on one computer

Hi Randy,

I've been using smfaddin for awhile on my laptop at home and my work computer. Usually I can transfer an excel file from one to the other and it would work fine on both. Currently, my home laptop works fine, but when I transfer the same file to my computer at work, I cannot retrieve data from ADVFN using RCHGetelementnumber. All the other websites (Yahoo, MSN, etc) seem to be working fine using the function except ADVFN. I can still open up a web browser and go to the website and see the data I'm trying to retrieve. Do you have any clue why this would happen and how I could fix it? Does excel block a website? Did something get corrupted along the way?

Thanks very much for all your help.
