Re: =RCHGetYahooHistory updating very slow

Well, I will check but I would expect the previous days EOD to be available before the market open on the next day?

Almost all had updated to 26th Jan data by 10am this morning but none had updated before 8am when I need the data.

I'm baffled too....

Shaun

American stocks are usually updated within several hours of the NYSE
close...

Is it possible you just have a caching problem?

I don't use IE but understand form that message that Excel uses IE's settings.

I did indeed need to change this setting so I will know if this worked tonight :)

Thanks.

Don't stuff it up for the rest of us

To all those people trying to develop stock data bases by down loading 1000's of financial items on 1000's of companies. Do you really think that all that data is correct? I recently down loaded ROE & dividend data on several companies from MSN, Yahoo & Commsec and found 3 different answers in some cases. In the end I had to go to company web sites to verify the correct data.

So just because you don't have to pay for it won't make it correct. But you will fuk it up for those of us who use the tool responsibly. Down load what u need and don't be greedy.

I don't normally respond to something like this, but you can save yourself a lot of aggravation by subscribing to aaii.org Stock Investor Pro and get 1000s of accurate data points on over 9000 companies. These are updated monthly. The data are exportable.

Something to consider before being pennywise and pound foolish with your time.

You can get loads of data from MarketSmith (www.investors.com) but it'll cost you $999/year. Very customizable lists, exportable to xls and xlsm.

Is there a way around this? Alternatively, is there another "pullable" element that will give me the past 5-yr Earnings growth rate? Can also use EPS growth rate (past 5-yr avg).

Would greatly appreciate anybody's help on this!

Plus, you can pull the data into EXCEL if you want. With the right data
connection, you can actually write your own functions to pull in
specific data items, just like the add-in functions do. I wrote up the
process here, back when I used SIPro:

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/smf_addin/message/7029

Another powerful screener/backtester is StockScreen123.com (and their
more powerful and more expensive cousin Portfolio123.com). I dropped my
SIPro subscription after I got SS123 -- it is slightly cheaper, has more
data fields (including a number of quarterly and annual financial
statement items), and has a "point in time" backtester. My biggest
complaint with SS123 is that it's too easy to create a bullet screen
that has phenomenal returns, but it selects stocks that can't be traded
in large quantities in the real world. So you do need to put in your
own liquidity factors to ensure you can actually trade the results of
the screens.

On the free side, both FinViz and Zacks allow screening on a number of
factors, plus you can export all of the results -- even if it is every
stock they have in their database.

Randy,

I believe they have added them back. Element 543 is the Stock Scouter Report Rating on MSN and it works fine. The webpage also offers the following:

The Stock Rating Summary verbiage: element 540 ?
Quick Summary (pro con): element 541 ?
Technical rating: element 547 ?
Valuation: element 548 ?
Ownership: element 549 ?
Fundamentals: element 550?

It would be great if you would reconnect these again. Thanks so very much for all of your help with this information.

Ah, my mistake. I did redefine elements 547-550. It was elements 551
(Return Grade) and 552 (Risk Grade) that I obsoleted. So many different
"Grades" on the stock. :)

To get elements 547-550, you probably just need the new element
definitions for MSN from the "Works in Progress" folder. Here was my
change log entry for that update:

2011-01-26 RCHGetElementNumber Updated the element definitions
in file smf-elements-1.txt because MSN
made changes to their web pages.
-- Too many were changed to mention them all.
-- Elements #2, #541-542, #544-546, and #551-552 were obsoleted.
I'll have to look at elements 540 and 541. I had obsoleted element 541,
but not 540. But it looks like the web page I used to get 540 from no
longer exists.

For now, these should get the Stock Rating Summary and Quick Summary:

=SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(smfGetTagContent("
http://investing.money.msn.com/investments/stock-ratings/?symbol=MMM","p",1,"Stock
Rating Summary"),"<b>",""),"</b>","")
=SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(smfGetTagContent("

Summary"),"<span>",CHAR(10)),"</span>",""),"<B>"," ==>
"),"</B>",""),"</p>",""),"<p>",CHAR(10)&"-- ")

options quotes

Hi, these are great tools and I got the quotes to work for stocks but I am having trouble with options. Option symbols have now been standardized with a form like "IBM120218C00185000" for the Feb 18,2012 185 IBM CALL option. When I try to use these types of codes I can get nothing back of any use. Do you have any ideas on this problem?

In case Randy is not available for the weekend, please try searching old messages for options.  I think there has been a lot of discussion about how to do this.  You may need the version of the addin that is in Works in Progress folder in the files area.

have a good weekend

While "IBM120218C00185000" may be the defined standard form of the
option symbol, it is not what all data sources use. For example, both
Google and Yahoo use it, but MSN would use ".IBM\12B18\185.0" and
OptionsXPress would use "IBM^^^120218C00185000".

That's why when I wrote the smfGetOptionQuotes() function, I created a
verbiage based option symbol and then have the add-in function convert
it to be what the individual data sources need. It also allows the
options symbol to be what people typically SAY when describing an
option, so it's self-documenting. For example, to get the bid price for
said option from OptionsXPress, you could use either of:

=smfGetOptionQuotes("IBM 2/18 2012 $185 Call","b",,"OX")
=smfGetOptionQuotes("IBM Feb 2012 $185 Call","b",,"OX")

I note you didn't indicate which function you are using when getting
nothing back, so it could be you are trying to use the
RCHGetYahooQuotes() function. Yahoo used to return option quotes via
their CSV interface. However, they stopped providing the quotes there
when the new option symbology was adopted. Which is one of the reasons I
ended up writing my own function above to get the option quotes.

Other than OptionsXPress (which is actually trading the options, so they
need to be up-to-date and accurate), I find the various sources to be
spotty on coverage, especially on the weekly options. But OptionsXPress
is also the slowest source of the data.
