Subject: RE: Re: [smf_addin] New ADVFN 10-yr spreadsheet not Updating

Even after resolving the links, I'm unable to recalculate with new ticker symbols. Part of the problem may be that the following URL doesn't seem to be working (of course, I replaced "Exchange"; and "Ticker" with actual names when testing):

http://www.advfn.com/exchanges/ <http://www.advfn.com/exchanges/%22&Exchange&%22/%22&Ticker&%22/financials?btn=annual_reports&mode=company_data&isfull=1&bsfull=1&cffull=1&effull=1&vrfull=1&grfull=1&fhfull=1&prfull=1> "&Exchange&"/"&Ticker&"/financials?btn=annual_reports&mode=company_data&isfull=1&bsfull=1&cffull=1&effull=1&vrfull=1&grfull=1&fhfull=1&prfull=1

Has anyone else had similar issues? Did ADVFN change their URL again? Thanks.

If you saw a location in front of the function, adding the add-in to that location doesn't help. You have to resolve the link errors before it can do the recalculation you need.

Check the "Location errors" item in the LINKS area of the Yahoo group. Or try just running the smfFixLinks macro that is part of the add-in.

First, my thanks to John Babcock for the new ADVFN 10-yr financial spreadsheet that works with the changes to the ADVFN website. It will be a lifesaver once I get it to update.

That's my problem, the spreadsheet won't recalculate when I enter a new ticker.

F9 changes the company and exchange info cells as well as the URL cells John includes. But all the data is $0.00. There are no error codes.

I noticed the spreadsheet uses C:/SMF for the Add-in location, I created that. I've had the add-in installed at C:/Program Files/SMF Add-in for several years. I made sure the Add-in is active in the Excel Options.

Any clues why the data doesn't update?

Thank you for uploading the updated file ADVFN - 10 year data -
workaround.xlsx. It is very helpful. One small thing - should you
remove older version?

might take a day or two.

Hi John

A personal thanks from me for this as I used to use advfn for my
financial data source and started working on a whole new version
yesterday from morningstar to get around the advfn issue.

Just a question with regards to the URL for individual stocks.
How did you get the correct url for each ticker? I track 3800
companies some of which are on your list but at least 600 ain't.
Is there an easy way to get them?

Thanks for your help

dmatu2000's discovery of the "company-" placeholder was a big
help, but it doesn't work to pages with 10 years of financial
data. The site redirects you to the page with the company that
only shows 5 years of data. The only way that I could figure out
to work around that is to use a lookup table in Excel that lists
the ADVFN URL "company name" for each ticker symbol. So you
enter the ticker, the table populates the URL company name and
exchange, then sends the fully formed URL to ADVFN.com. I
populated it with about the top 3000 companies.

The resulting spreadsheet is uploaded to the "Upload by Forum

Replying to what bushpilote said here: "In ADVFN's beta version

After poking around, I've been able to get this path to work:

http://www.advfn.com/common/financial/"&Exchange&"/company-"&Tick\
er&"/full-financials?isfull=1&bsfull=1&cffull=1

Meaning the company name is not required as long as there is a
placeholder.

as is in both cases.

Replacing "microsoft-MSFT" with "intel-INTC" will get you Intel's
financials. For IBM's financials you replace NASDAQ with NYSE and
"microsoft-MSFT" with "ibm-international-business-machines-IBM".

In ADVFN's beta version access to a company's financial data
requires both the company name (the name they have in their
database) and ticker along with the exchange ticker symbol. It
remains to be seen if the need to use the company's name will be
the new norm once they go live with their redesigned website.

Hope this helps.

The FinViz screener does allow sorting, but I don't see an

If you want to sort and filter, you'll have to convert the array
to values. You could have VBA do that, or do it manually. You
could even have a little macro that would fill the data onto the
page AS values. For example, just one statement:

Range("A1:D3") =
smfGetCSVFile("http://finviz.com/export.ashx?v=152&t=MMM,IBM&c=1,\
2,3,4 <http://finviz.com/export.ashx?v=152&t=MMM,IBM&c=1,2,3,4>
", pDim1:=3, pDim2:=4)

The two pDim variables tell the smfGetCSVFile() function how many
rows and columns to return.

turn off the alphabetical sorting when these are imported? I
would like the order I type the symbols in to be the same as the
order they are displayed. Is this possible, and if so how?
Second, is there a way to be able to import the data and apply a
"sort & filter" function without copying the data to a new page
to get rid of the "array" which can not be edited.
