Have done a clean operating system install on a new disk. My spreadsheets were reloaded after reinstalling the smf add-in. The array functions work fine but when I press Ctrl-Alt-J to grab other data from several sites my computer gives a Bell Ring notification with no error message. Any ideas what is causing this and what I need to do to fix this? FYI the same spreadsheets work fine when using another computer. Sys info is 64bit,Win 7Pro.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Roger

It just means the keyboard sequence Ctrl+Alt+J is not assigned to any
macro. That's an EXCEL setting, so it wouldn't necessarily transfer from
one machine to another.

I hate to be dumb but isn't the keyboard combination assigned within the smf add-in. Both my computers where this is installed (one with the error bell and one working fine) do not list any macros when I use the command "view macros".

Such a keyboard combination was assigned in the smfUpdateDownloadTable
example workbook. That may have brought it forward to your other machines?
Not sure. You could try opening that example on your new machine and see if
that keyboard combination then works? Of course, I'm assuming you're
talking about that particular macro...

You won't see any of the add-in macros under the "View Macros" dialog in
EXCEL. By default, it only shows macros for open workbooks. I don't know of
a way to make it show macros from add-ins. So you need to type in the macro
name before any of the buttons for that macro will activate on the right.

Randy,

Don't know if this is related. When I use the smf command function "smfUpdateDownloadTable" I receive an error message saying "The first highlighted column is to the left of the "Ticker" range. Update aborted." You can see that this file has only a row number column on the left, an array, then the ticker and a combination of data grab columns and computation columns.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry -- that's a misleading error message for your situation. The version
of the add-in you have can update individual rows, individual columns, or a
specified range within the data table.

Unfortunately, you included the "Ticker" column in your highlighted range.
It's one that can't be updated, so it triggered an error. If you want to
update everything, just don't highlight a range.

I've just changed the error message to now be:

The first highlighted column must be to the right of the "Ticker" range,
within the data table. Update aborted.

Hi Randy,

On the computer with the new disk the example workbook still gives the error bell with the ctrl-alt-j keystroke combination. Fortunately I can now use the command icon to accomplish the same thing. Thanks for making that clear for me. Please let me know if you have any more ideas about how I can get the ctrl-alt-j to work again on the computer with the new disk. I have even gone into the trust settings to make sure external data grabs are enabled.

Ummm. Are you just using the wrong keyboard shortcut? I just opened up the
example of smfUpdateDownloadTable, and it uses Ctrl+Shift+J as the keyboard
shortcut, not Ctrl+Alt+J.

To add the keyboard combination to the macro:

1. Hit alt-F8 to get the list of macros
2. Type "smfUpdateDownloadTable" into the box where it says macro name.
3. Now, all your buttons should be available. Click "Options".
4. Click in the "Shortcut Key" box and enter a capital J. It should change
as you type it in.
5. Click "OK".

The trust setting shouldn't be necessary. That can be for external
references, which you don't have. Or EXCEL web queries, which you're not
using. I didn't get that error when I opened the workbook, and it would
have opened up using MY trust settings. The trust setting apply to your
machine, not to the workbook.

Hi Randy

After I upgraded Office 2007 to 2010, RCHGetElementNumber stopped working, all other functions work fine. I reinstalled the last version of the SMF_addin with no positive result.

Maybe I have to change something in the Trust Center? Thank you
Roberto

I'm going to need more details than "stopped working"?

What do you get with:

=RCHGetElementNumber("MMM";,943)

That makes no sense to me if other functions work, because
RCHGetElementNumber() should just be executing those other functions. For
example, what do you get with:

=RCHGetTableCell("http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=MMM",1,"VALUATION
MEASURES","TRAILING P/E")

For the most part, that's all this is doing:

=RCHGetElementNumber("MMM",943)

There may be something causing the "Error" before it gets to issuing that
RCHGetTableCell() function, but I have no idea of how to diagnose that?
What do you get with:

=RCHGetElementNumber("Version")

Also, what do you get with:

=smfGetAParms(943)

With =smfGetAParms(943)

YahooKS;Trailing P/E;http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=~~~~~;1;VALUATION MEASURES;TRAILING P/E; ; ;0;0;0;0

with =RCHGetElementNumber("Version")

Stock Market Functions add-in, Version 2.1.2014.05.25 (C:\Program Files\SMF Add-in; ; Local; 1)

Sorry, but at this point, I don't have a clue. It appears the element
definition is loading OK. So it should just be doing the equivalent of the
RCHGetTableCell() function I had you try. It doesn't make sense to me that
the RCHGetTableCell() version would work and RCHGetElementNumber() version
would return "Error".

On my own machine, I would set a breakpoint in the VBA code and execute one
line at a time until I found out which one is causing the error. Short of
that, I don't have a way to give you a resolution, since the problem
obviously isn't repeating itself here.
