Hi Randy, I noticed your adjusted closes before the dividend payout is different from Yahoo's (see 2017-05-15 & 2017-05-16). Is this an error?

Hey Randy, I noticed your adjusted closes before the dividend payouts are different from Yahoo's closes (see 2017-05-15 & 2017-05-16 for MMM). Is there a way around this?

No error. That's exactly what adjusting for dividends is supposed to do.
Just like you would adjust for a stock split.

It's a matter of making historical prices be on par with the current price.

You can always use the unadjusted price.

I want to have a solution to weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual data before I
do an official release.

I've not found an acceptable source of free historical quotes. None have
adjustments for dividends. The main pay service I saw a mention of was not
acceptable. Something like $30 a month...

Have you tried pulling from Investopedia? They have a historical price function with an adjusted close field.

Depending on your need, you could try Quandl's Quote Media Premium service at $50/month or $450+- per year. The CSV format is readily loaded into Excel arrays similar to the old Yahoo data. The closing price data is decent; however I found many errors in the adjusted close data which I use for much of my work. I found Yahoo's adjusted close data from Randy's smfGetYahooHistory function to be more accurate than Quote Media's however I ran into a fair number of corrupted data streams with Yahoo.

Ultimately, I ended up building my own solution using multiple sources; however Yahoo would be my first choice for free data with possible backup using Google's historical data (which has more problems than Yahoo's).

One more source for free company historical price data only (no indexes, ETFs, etc) is Quandl's end of day WIKI database. That data is readily available with a URL fetch in various formats and since it is curated by a volunteer group, is probably of decent quality.

I'm having a similar issue with formulas such as:

=rchgettablecell("http://sportsdatabase.com/mlb/query?su=1&sdql=o%3ASTL",1,"SU:")

Sometimes, IE will go to the regular page and I'll get the string: '9556-9551 (-0.02, 50.0%)' returned;
however, if the site is getting a lot of traffic, sometimes an open to the public query like that one will result in a 500 timeout page: (See Attachment)

Now, usually, if / when this happens, I can just run 'smfforcerecalculation'
but lately, it seems that the macro doesn't do anything.

Did something change where the smf plugin used to be able to recognize a 500 error page as an error that needs to be smfforcerecalculation macro'd? (rather than recognizing it as a successful query with a parse error)

Thanks!

Nothing has changed regarding recognizing an error. I'm not even sure the
add-in could recognize the error, because a web page *is* returned. It's
just that it contains an error message.

You can always check the log to see what kinds of things are going on...

Thanks so much, I am so glad you have a handle on yahoo! I sure don't.

Out of curiosity, why the switch to JSON by Yahoo?

JSON seems to be the new way to handle the data. More and more services are
going to it. That's why I ended up finding and adapting some JSON parsing
routines.

I am seeing an odd behavior in the add-in.

When I open an Excel 2010 spreadsheet which uses the add-in, for example, to get current prices of a list of stocks from Yahoo, the numbers do not update automatically.

I have to toggle the add-in in order for it to work. That is, I have to follow this sequence of steps:

File/Options/Add-Ins/Go then either check or uncheck the SMF-Add-In box.

What am I doing wrong?
