Hi,
I have a problem with the =smfGetAdvFNElement function. Following
code gives me an error message:
=smfGetAdvFNElement("KO";"A";999)
Since I am outside the US I use smf-AdvFN-Prefix.txt to add the
prefix uk to the URL. It seems that the function RCHGetWebData()
gives the error. Instead of extracting the whole Web page it only
extract 251 signs. I use Excel 2010 and Chrome as my default
browser.
Does anybody know what could cause this problem. I really
appreciate any help.
Regards
Armin

AdvFN has been a problem for nearly a month now. Take a look at some of the
recent conversation threads on the group. They've been in the midst of
changing (and screwing up) their web site for some time.
I probably won't do anything for their website until they go to the new
beta format they've been touting. Which will be a vast change from all of
the current elements.
In the meantime, some have converted over to use GuruFocus or MorningStar,
since both offer 10 years of financial data.

There are private screeners out there also. I recall that gummy did some XL work < link > some years ago... certainly not as extensive as rch.

I had two reasons: one was to improve my Excel programming skills and second was even the free custom screens don't contain everything I would like to screen for. Certainly, the free screeners can narrow down a large list of stocks to a small list of commonly used valuation metrics but I was looking for something that could crank through a large list based on very specific criteria.
However, I appreciate Randy's point and won't use the SMF Add-In to build screeners.

Try these free ones -- FinBiz Stockfetcher MarketWatch Yahoo
Or try http://www.freestockcharts.com/ where you can build your own screening criteria.
But don't miss use this great tool.

I'm always impressed with the knowledge base of this group so I thought I'd throw this out as I've been scratching my head. Has anyone built a stock screener in Excel? I've been building some financial analysis spreadsheets and have no problem analyzing a single company but I'd like to make custom screens to sort through and return companies that meet my criteria. My programming knowledge is pretty basic but I haven't found anything out in cyberspace that describes how one would go about doing this.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks bf. It works fine for me.
I have just come back to using the SMF add-in again after a long
hiatus and noticed that MSN money seem to have totally stripped
down there financial statements (looks like they are using
Morningstar data now) which my entire system was based on.
ADVFN seems like the next best option.
SMF addin is a fantastic tool but it is incredibly frustrating
when data providers change their formatting or what data is
available. I guess that is the price to pay for everything being
free!

In my previous post, I forgot to say it is located in "Files"
"Uploads by forum members"

I noticed today that the drop down box to change the years for
financials statements started working again (at least for the
last 15 years) so I decided to throw together a quick spreadsheet
to pull the data using =RCHGETHTMLTABLE(
I've tested it on a few tickers, and it seems to work well for
them.
I'm sure it could be modified by someone to be more elegant, but
it works for my needs.

I certainly wouldn't spend a lot of time changing over to AdvFN right now.
Even if they get the current pages working, they've already announced a new
beta version of the financial statements. So you'd need to redo everything
once that conversion was done.

*sigh* Don't I know it. :(
MSN has made changes at least once per year...
...and they dropped a number of items in this last change.
