RCHGetTable Cell Question

Posted by: "GaryFera" gfera@shaw.ca   GaryFera

Mon Jul 25, 2011 6:30 am (PDT)

Randy, one of the available views on Finance.Yahoo.com is the Real-Time view an example of which is shown below.

The "change" data contains an arrow indicating if the security is up or down in price. But this arrow is a small image and when I use the RCHGetTableCell function to retrieve the data from the web site I do get the dollar value of the change but not the small image. So I cannot tell from the inquiry if the security has gone up or down because that particular Yahoo view does not provide the previous close price.

Do you have any suggestions that would allow me to determine the direction of the change? Thanks.

Gary

In similar situations, I've looked for the text of the actual image of the
arrow, then used that to determine if it was positive or negative. Or you
can look at the font color on the change amount, since they usually use red
or green.

here is my earlier comment regarding 'total return' posted somewhere else,
but worth considering here

=============================================

be careful about just plugging data for a total return calculation.

there are several assumptions and calculations that may not be
representative of real-world events.

> the day a stock goes ex-div, may not be the day the dividend gets paid.
(e.g., SPY) the delay can be upwards of 30-days -- or more.

http://www.dividendinvestor.com/?chk=ecc2b1309874364&symbol=spy&submit=GO

ex-div = 17june; div payment = 29july

how do you treat this six week spread of price appreciation without the
dividend or dividend payment?

> when the dividend does get paid, what assumptions are made regarding the
dividend reinvestment price (open, mid, close, vwap)?

> do you include commissions on the reinvestment?

> how do you handle fractional shares? (e.g., hold in cash at 0% interest
until you can purchase and integral number of shares -- in an odd-lot)
=================================================

i'd like to see how others treat these...

cheers

First, let me state that existing documentation is adequate for experienced Excel users but not novice.

Randy, thanks to johncblacker for zipping all the doc files into one called Doc-7-6-11.zip This makes it much easier for users to download the entire documentation.

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/YCUsTg27lVq6WboFqT7DUpGTbXDYgYWAsxzEMUhJEisRUushnIXG2yHeoMvnoR_Vg3pzhjtElX2vgX3Inr-7hxwLmJ0kVZUL/Documentation/Doc-7-6-11.zip

People need to understand that your skills are in the programming not in at writing user documentation. All the information is there but it does require a little knowledge of excel in order to understand.

I think this person is looking for a STEP BY STEP instruction manual on how to create a useful spreadsheet using the SMF add-in. Unfortunately, that would be almost impossible without knowing exactly what they wish to accomplish.

The SMF-add-in is a fantastic tool but it does require folks to have Excel knowledge. For example, novice and some experienced Excel users may not even know the that putting an = as the first character in a cell is excels way of identifying a macro or a function to be performed.

I think your documentation is perfectly fine for those that understand Excel. I'm not sure what can be done to help those that do not.

Maybe a statement that some Excel knowledge is required might help.

I, too, found it a little overwhelming when I first started using the SMF add-in. It takes a good deal of effort on the user's part to learn because quite frankly most of us don't think out what we want.

I teach folks how to trade stocks and it takes a great deal of prodding to get them to just put in writing what they would like to accomplish. We call it a "Trading Plan".

The folks on this group are extremely helpful. So I would suggest the person who needs guidance with the SMF add-in put in writing a "Simple" example of what they would like the SMF add-in to accomplish for them. Notice I said "SIMPLE" I find it best to start with the idea, list what I want to accomplish and then break it into simple steps. I find it easier if I just start by laying out how I want the information displayed in excel by just typing text into the cells. Then figure out how to fill in each cell with real data. Sometimes it is best to put in on paper and then into the spreadsheet.

It this much easier than trying to solve world hunger or some other major function in one step.

KISS method works for me.

Where are you running into a problem?

Maybe this one will work. You want to go to the yahoo group for SMF Addin, select files, select documentation folder, then look for doc-7-6-11. The first link will get you to the documentation folder.

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/smf_addin/files/Documentation/

The link below when I click on it bring up a window asking what I want to do with the zip file, open, save or save as

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/8IQtTrjVe7r7NIiexhXW4VBbD_xUr2e7lIifiVFyL8vRXAqTDE6OIcG0Kayv1sYcTGJ6xyZalsOouyboM5Qnl39yOX8sY7Fv/Documentation/Doc-7-6-11.zip

These yahoo generated links must temporary links because I always try the links before I send the email. Both of the above links worked for me.

Real time data

Hi all!
I have question for yahoo real time data users:
i'm using yahoo real time data for years in my applications with request for multiple tickers. the request URL looks like this:

http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=HSNI+HTCO+HUBG+HURN+IART+IBOC+ICGE+IFSIA+IILG+IIVI+INSP&f=se1d1l1t1v

and it use to work just fine, but in last couple weeks i'm experiencing following problem, described here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwaIuVHCah0

sometimes yahoo returns some weird numbers, dated with 1/1/1970.
it's not related to any particular ticker,it may appear for different set of tickers, i tried to make a big pause between requests, but so far-no luck. sent email to yahoo CS,but their response make no sense whatsoever. they suggest me to use stock summary page for whatever reason. anyway- i would appreciate,if someone can confirm same problem and\or any suggestions about how can i solve it.

Thank you!

If you'll look at the message archives, you'll see it's NOT just a problem
with the real-time feed. The delayed feed has also been returning enormous
values from time to time for the last traded price.

Just normal EXCEL string concatenation:

=smfGetTagContent("http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s="&C3,"a",1,"Filter
Headlines")

If you want to use the "Ticker" reference instead of a cell reference,
you'll need to assign a name to the cell reference.
