IE opens new tab when running macro

Posted by: "friedman_steve" friedman_steve@yahoo.com   friedman_steve

I have an extensive spreadsheet set up that grabs SMF data from a variety of sources. Recently (last couple months), IE (Internet Explorer) sometimes opens up new blank tabs when I run the excel spreadsheet with a new stock ticker. the tab addresses are related to sites I'm grabbing data from. (incidentally, IE is not even my default browser).

Does anyone know why this happens & how to turn if off? It's just a nuisance and slows down computer.

below is an example of one of the tabs:
about:blank#http://finance.google.com/finance?fstype=ii&q=MDRX

Happens using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
Excel 2007
IE 8

Thanks.

Try using a new element definition file from the "Works in Progress" folder
from the files area of the group. You'll need the one with Google elements,
but I'd just suggest updating all of them. You'll need to replace those
files in your SMF folder and then run the smfForceRecalculation macro to
reload the element definitions.

I think that fixed the problem last time someone brought it up.

I'm a retired mainframe programmer, but I've been programming computers
since the late 60's. In my career, I was responsible for the system that
allowed the pricing and reserving actuaries to do their loss projections at
a large commercial insurance company. When I started, we used to do annual
loss triangles for 5 years. When I retired, they could do monthly loss
triangles for up to 40 years of data. As usual, people think more data
helps, but in too many cases, it's just additional noise.

IMO, the most difficult thing about application programming on the PC is the
variety of hardware/software platforms that exist. If the add-in were to
become a commercial product, it would require about 10 times as much work as
I've already put into it -- to account for all of those varying platforms
and to test all of those permutations.

Nice to know someone (especially one who has lot more experience than I) other than me who thinks/opines that more data is not necessarily better.

Do you have a "about me" link?

I am guessing you are in the East side of USA?

No "about me" link. Not that much to tell.

I lived in Minnesota (St. Paul) most of my life, from the ages of 4-49,
except for the 3 years I attended Iowa State University -- but moved to
Phoenix when I "retired" in 2006.

You can always pick them up using another add-in function, such as
RCHGetTableCell(). I'm unlikely to add any more MorningStar elements,
because of their trend towards dynamic display of data, which prevents the
add-in from accessing the data.

I tried to mimic the existing element definitions, but "no dice"...somehow this HTML was not getting parsed correctly for those last 2 entries. I tried skipping 4 rows after Asia Emergings, but I got "undefined".

"Undefined" means an element number has no definition. If you change the
element definition files, you need to run smfForceRecalculation to have the
add-in load those new definitions. Otherwise, the definitions are only
loaded from the external files once, when you run the first
RCHGetElementNumber() function. It was actually the original purpose of the
smfForceRecalculation macro -- for me to test new element definitions.

Probably a temporary Yahoo thing. I assume you checked the Yahoo option
quotes pages for the equities in question? Do you have your IE options set
to always get a new web page? Sometimes N/A is what they have first thing in
the morning. If your browser cache settings aren't getting new web pages,
you'll see the N/A values later in the day.

What's the best way to get all of these dynamic tables ?

Use IE automation to change the checkboxes, then fetch the data one at a time ?

Give it a try...

Off hand, I don't see a way to get a bookmarkable URL that the add-in can
use. But I'm not all that familiar with ASP pages.

A Query table worked, so I figured the add-in would work as well.

Should, yes, since a query table requires a bookmarkable URL as well...

Problem is....you don't expose nor retain your instance of IE. In fact you grab the HTML and then quit the session.

But in order to refresh the query table, it needs to have a bookmarkable
URL. It doesn't pull the HTML from that copy of IE. It's just used to create
the query table settings (URL, which table(s), etc).

I just tried it, and what's happening is that all the check boxes are
"sticky". They must store the check box settings in a cookie. So if you do a
query, you'll get the settings based on that combination of check boxes.
However, if you now go and change the check box settings and refresh the
query, you'll get the data based on your NEW settings, not the original
settings you created the query from.

So, your settings are NOT saved in the query's URL (which is what would make
the URL bookmarkable). The only way to get back to your original query table
results would be to reset all of the check boxes to the original values and
then refresh the query. That means you can't save multiple query tables,
each with their own settings, and refresh them all. When you do refresh them
all, all of them will return the exact same results based on the current
check box settings.

Array Limit

Posted by: "wu_ming_sg" nghongchong@hotmail.com   wu_ming_sg

Wed Sep 7, 2011 7:58 pm (PDT)

Hi Randy,
Refer to the below quote from Documentation please."When elements are
retrieved, the source code of the web page is saved in an array within
the VBA environment, then the element is extracted from that source
code. It is done that way so that when a number of elements are
retrieved from the same web page, the web page only needs to be
retrieved once. Note that the array to save web pages is limited to 1000
pages. Anything beyond that will get an error message. The entire array
can be reset by either exiting and re-entering EXCEL or by running the
smfForceRecalculation macro. This macro purges all saved web pages and
reacalculates all functions. "
I am using a cell named Ticker. When I change the ticker symbol in my
template, the whole file will auto-calculate. I have a mix of
RHCGetElementNumbers and RHCGetTableCell. Will my template be restricted
by the array limit?
eg. If I change the ticker in my file a 1000 times to look at different
stocks, would I face the above situation?
And what will the error message look like?

The formula will return this if you try to access over 1000 web pages
without exiting EXCEL or running the smfForceRecalculation macro:

"Error -- Too many web page retrievals"

Just run the smfForceRecalculation macro from time to time and you should be
OK. If you're running in to the error message, you're trying to access too
much data, IMO. Same comment if you're entering 1000 ticker symbols into the
template. The add-in is intended for ad hoc usage. If you need that much
data, you should be looking at a database product like AAII's Stock Investor
Pro.
