I understand the F9 function and such, I have not messed with the functions either. I keep track of my purchases, do a little forecasting, do some what-if scenarios, all of which causes the spreadsheet to recalculate when a change is made. If I find an error in my formula and make a correction, the spreadsheet bogs down. What I was wondering was to see if there was a way to set it up so that the functions do not update every time the spreadsheet has been changed or modified.

You could change EXCEL to manual calculation.

What I'm saying is the functions SHOULDN'T update every time the
spreadsheet is modified -- unless you made them that way by adding a
volatile parameter to the function (e.g. NOW()).

If the volatile parameter is the issue, you could use a cell reference,
with NOW() in the cell. Then, if you change the cell to a value, the
functions that use the cell are no longer volatile. And they will update
any time you change that cell value.

Stocks. I only have 2 ETFs, CEFL & MORL.

I went back to finviz. Takes forever, and I manually correct the errors.
There is no automatic updating of Ex-div and pay dates, or amounts, just
annual yield and return. Oh, well. I'll live with it.

Thank you for everything.

If you are looking for Ex-Dividend dates and payouts you might try

www.dividata.com it is free but they do not have all stock – several sample spreadsheets in the unloaded by user folder
www.dividend.com it has free but fee also. Their premium service is reasonable somewhere around $149 per year.
www.dividendchannel.com it is free but you can't use the SMF-ADDIN with it because their web pages are java scripted.

These 3 are fairly quick updating to the latest dividend news. Each site has it way of ranking or rating the dividend stocks.
Dividendchannel changes its ranking every day.

I use all 3 sites. I use Dividend.com's premium watchlist facility to notify me of events for the 49 high yield stocks I follow. The email comes a few days prior to the event so it gives me time to react.

thank you, I will try the first one and the last one. dividend.com did
not have 6 stock dividends listed recently, and quite a few more over
the last year. I emailed them each time. Their response was curt, and
downright rude. It was much better before Paul Rubillo sold it. They
asked if I wanted a full refund if I was unhappy, so I said yes. I was
paying $99/year, but I found that lately I was telling them about
ex-dividend dates, and not the other way around.

thanks again

Really, I have had great response from Dividend.com. But maybe that is because I sent them 30 premium customers last 2 years. Last year they offered the premium for $99 and I sent them quite a few subscribers.

I have not found a site yet FREE or FEE that has all stocks covered for dividend information. I think it is based on their criteria that they do not list certain stocks.

If you send me a list of stock symbols I'll check dividend.com to see if they now list them in their premium offer.

I actually had a similar situation with WHX & WHZ in March 2014. They were late getting the Ex-div date updated.
These stocks from Whiting trust only give about 8 days notice. So a 2 -4 days delay is costly.
Both stock ex-div on 5/16/14 and it was declared 5/7/14, 9 days is short. I got the watchlist notice email from dividend.com 8am 5/8/14.
I have the emails forward to my cell phone in case I am not on the computer.

MCC has a 5/23/2014 Ex-div date, declared on 5/1/14, payout 06/13/14

I think Dividend.com is usually quick to post once it is announced. But when stocks only allow 7 – 10 days before they announce the next actual date it makes me nervous.
I trade the high yielding stocks and it is imperative I know the exact Ex-div as soon as possible because traders start bailing out several days prior to Ex-div date.
I don't want to be the last one out. I want to be the first one out before price starts dropping.

thank you, I will try the first one and the last one. dividend.com did not have 6 stock dividends listed recently, and quite a few more over the last year. I emailed them each time. Their response was curt, and downright rude. It was much better before Paul Rubillo sold it. They asked if I wanted a full refund if I was unhappy, so I said yes. I was paying $99/year, but I found that lately I was telling them about ex-dividend dates, and not the other way around.

thanks again

Were the error items stocks, or ETFs? That element number won't work for ETFs. They don't have Key Statistics web pages.
Stocks. I only have 2 ETFs, CEFL & MORL.

I went back to finviz. Takes forever, and I manually correct the errors. There is no automatic updating of Ex-div and pay dates, or amounts, just annual yield and return. Oh, well. I'll live with it.

Thank you for everything.

I *know* they have the correct info *now*, because I sent them so many
emails.

I mean, if I have to look it up myself and tell them, why should I pay them?

I don't pay them anymore, and will not, do not, will never again, rely
on them.

I had the same experience w/them re: WHX & WHZ.

I'll do it myself, that way I'll know it's correct.

Hi All,

I'm trying to populate a worksheet with financial data and was using AdvFn to get this data, which is working great, with the exception of the two most recent quarters. For instance if I'm looking for the Total Revenue of PG, and I look this up using RCHGetElementNumber() and look for element 8206, it's returning 64,044 vs. the actual revenue of 20,559. This seems to be consistent across any tickers I try, and also returns similar results if I use SMFGetADVFNElement().

Browsing through some of these conversations, it sounds like there may have been a change to AdvFn and this is what's causing my issue, but it's strange since the number doesn't resemble any other financial data that I can find. Is this a known issue? If so, is there a workaround?

If this doesn't work anymore, and you recommend not using AdvFn for financial data, what would you recommend instead?

Thanks!

When I go to the AdvFN web page, I see 64,044 -- so the add-in is returning
correctly what AdvFN is displaying.

Comparing it to Yahoo, it looks like AdvFN is posting a YTD Total Revenue...

So is this related to the advfn current site vs. their beta site? i.e. this:

http://www.advfn.com/exchanges/NYSE/PG/financials?btn=quarterly_reports&mode=company_data http://www.advfn.com/exchanges/NYSE/PG/financials?btn=quarterly_reports&mode=company_data

vs. this:

http://uk.advfn.com/common/financial/NYSE/procter-gamble-PG/income-statement?pm=Q http://uk.advfn.com/common/financial/NYSE/procter-gamble-PG/income-statement?pm=Q

?

I've read in other threads that you wouldn't want to change the add-in if it's not certain that the new advfn design is final (which is completely reasonable). In the interim, what other sources would you (or other users) recommend for similar data?

Thanks again!

A lot of people moved to GuruFocus when we had problems with AdvFN last
year.

Hi Pete

I'm back here after ages, and lo and behold, you have already posted my favorite "F wall street" sp sheet

I thank my stars, start using it, encounter some errors on GF pages, change RCHGetTableCell formula as gurufocus seems to have changed some descriptions

I thank you, Randy and other gurus here, for this excellent community and your hard work

some questions
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. would my version be of any use ? : Is there some place on this group files section, I can upload my (version of) sp sheet on a " _purely_ for review" basis (not for all to download or depend on at this stage)
1.1. Temporarily it's uploaded to http://1drv.ms/1mKwAQm http://1drv.ms/1mKwAQm
1.2. mods / changes made to Gf sheet
2. why's Xl forgetting the data collected : I always thought that XL remembered the values that I picked up from the web. What do I mean, I mean IF I ran this sp sheet for tickers, WDC and XRX (default ones), and then without closing XL , if I came back and ran this sp sheet a second time for tickers WDC, XRX and MSFT, in the old scheme of things, Xl remembered the values it picked up for WDC, XRX and went searching the web only for the new tickers. However this time though it seems to be doing it all over again. what should I tweak in XL to improve it's memory ?
2.1. I'm using XL 2010, version 14.0.7106.... blah ..blah on a win 7 machine
3. Max download of data, infuriating website owners, increasing blood pressure !!: To avoid all that , I used to download critical info once in three months for my standard set of tickers, keep it some place, use V lookup for the next n runs, and update only current price . I seem to have lost that magic sp sheet to download data and throw it some place ....
==========
regards
Subu
I haven't done a line-by-line check, so caveat emptor. If you spot any issues, let me know and I'll fix and update it.
