Marty, these hosting services use "Virtualization" technology. Their servers simulate running individual PCs and transmit only the screen interactions between the client and host. Each virtual PC at the host is identical. So, once it is setup every client gets the same thing. It's not that big of a deal to configure - the technical hurdle is not the problem.

And, yes, the licensing of software for these services is very different than "shrink wrap" licenses.

Not to add to your confusion but I get a clear chart using the link in a
browser.
However when I put the
=RCHCreateComment("http://www.bondtools.com/nbbi.png",99)
into excel all I get is <http://www.bondtools.com/nbbi.png> Chart which
when I click on it gives me a browser window with the clear chart.

Thanks for looking at this. Does sound like you are getting the reverse of
what I see i.e. clear image on website and dark/unreadable image in Excel
comment. I will have to see if I can find similar charts elsewhere. Some
obscure setting issue I guess.

I just downloaded the template RCHGetTableCell-Template-IBD-Stock-Checkup and after changing the smf addin location I get #NAME? in every cell

I’m not sure how to fix it since cells contain different values. I downloaded the file a few times saving as different names and still got the same errors

I’m going to try another machine just for the heck of it. I’ll post the results later.

Kermit

Not a clue. I just opened the template from the group and tried all three of those -- they worked fine.

You didn't exceed your daily limit of stock check-ups, did you?

If you have a path preceding the function, such as:

'C:\SMF Add-in\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla'!

...then that is an unresolved link that needs to be manually fixed. I
usually just run the smfFixLinks macro that is in the add-in. Otherwise, a
"Find and Replace All", changing them to nothing, works just as well --
it's what the macro does (or tries to do).

The unresolved links are an issue because of how EXCEL handles user-defined
functions from add-ins.

Kermit,

The problem is that Investors throws up a splash ad randomly that you have to close before you can get access to the ratings. (perhaps just to spite freeloaders)

Logging in to IBD ( better if you have a subscription) sets a cookie on your machine that avoids this issue.

I log in and stay logged in and everything works smoothly.

There are two prefixes because there are two SMF functions. Both have

I don't know what is going on.  I upload the file as I usually do.  I normally don't download and test.  I did download this one an it is not an Excel File.  I have the Excel file running on my computer.  But when I upload it turns out to be not an Excel file.

I don't know why it is not uploading to Yahoo.  I have attached a copy.  It seems to work here.

rchgettablecell Question

Hello,

I am using this formula:

=rchgettablecell("http://performance.morningstar.com/PerformanceHtml/stock/trailing-total-returns.action?t="&A2&"&ndec=2&ep=true&annlz=true&ops=clear",5,"YTD",""&A2&"")

to return the ytd return of a stock I define in cell a2 of my spreadsheet from morningstar.com. However, on this same page, there is a row header that lists the category of the stock. I'm trying to tet the category and am unable to pull down this piece of data.

I've tried almost everything I can think of and could import the column headings, but unfortunately not the row headings.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you,

They have some very bizarre HTML table coding. I would just get it from
above the graph:

=smfGetTagContent("http://performance.morningstar.com/PerformanceHtml/st\
ock/trailing-total-returns.action?t=
"&A2,"span",1,"cdot2")

Otherwise:

=RCHGetTableCell("http://performance.morningstar.com/PerformanceHtml/sto\
ck/trailing-total-returns.action?t=
"&A2,1,">YTD",,,,3,"</table")
