I don't have the add in, that's why I was asking if it worked the way I had it. I'm not sure why it won't work for me. I've tried it on several computers so I know it's not the network.

Hello All,

Thanks for the help the last time on the Econ Data. Still making finishing touches to it so I'll upload it when I'm finished. I think people will find it interesting.

I'm having trouble using RCHGetElementNumber(SPY,5184) to get the Average P/E from Yahoo. I'm receiving an error. I'm thinking that it could be because they've changed the url to be http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hl?s=SPY+Holdings, but I'm not sure if the "+Holdings" is already factored into the function. All other functions work so it isn't a matter of not setting up the add-in right or something.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!
Justin

The reason it's not working is that the holdings elements are defined for a
mutual fund web page. The ETF holdings page is laid out differently than a
mutual fund holdings page.

Try using VFINX instead. It's the most popular mutual fund based on the S&P
500 index.

Oh ok, thanks! Also is there a way to check to see if the symbol is an ETF or Mutual Fund or Company? Is see in Profile it mentions something about Legal Type: Exchange Traded Fund, but it could even be from another website or somewhere. Do you know of any site that clearly labels it?

Mutual funds are easy to recognize by ticker symbol -- they are almost
always 5-character ticker symbols with an "X" as the 5th character.

That profile page on Yahoo is laid out differently for mutual funds,
exchange-traded funds, and equities, so you could do something there.

FinViz assigns an industry group of "Exchange Traded Fund", so you could
identify them there. They don't carry data on mutual funds.

Thanks for the help. I achieved it by recognizing whether there was a Key Statistics page or Holdings page. That was good enough for me.

I have a question: what are the best websites to do research on stocks' financial conditions for the last 10 years?
 Thank you.

The best would probably be AdvFN. Second would be MorningStar. Most others
don't have 10 years of data.

For AdvFN, I'd suggest using the RCHGetElementNumber() functions. For
Morningstar, see:

Is there a way to add certain SMF add-in functions (such as RCHGetYahooQuotes and RCHGetYahooHistory) into a work book so that I could use the spread sheet on other computers without having to install the add-in on each machine?

You'd need to copy over the necessary VBA modules into the workbook, so
that it doesn't need the external functions from the add-in. There are
examples of such workbooks here:

Files > Templates and Examples > SMFLite

..although they are based on older versions of add-in functions. But that's
the problem with not using the add-in -- modules don't get updated
automatically.

I am trying some of the templates and it keeps filling each cell with NAME? Is there something I need to do to get it to reference the Stock?

Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:56 pm (PST) . Posted by:

That either means you don't have the add-in activated, or it's activated in
a different location than the one the workbook uses and links need to be
updated manually. Check out the "Location errors" item in the LINKS area of
the Yahoo group for more info.

Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate your help.

hi,
is there a way to interrogate the IBD from their screen center page? i'm a member and know all about being logged in to their site. the web page is
http://research.investors.com/screen-center/?screen=9172
but i don't know if the 9172 number is static or dynamic.

then, part 2, is there a way to get, say, the top sector performers list from
http://research.investors.com/screen-center/?screen=9171

etc, etc for their other lists.

thanks,
mike

I don't see a way to get the data from the screen center. Those pages are
dynamically generated, and the Export and EXCEL output options are
incomplete when I use the links they generate.

I grab the IBD50 table from the eTables page, with something like:

=RCHGetTableCell("
http://research.investors.com/etables/IBD50XLS.aspx?tabView=IBD50&from=etables&columnsort1=ibd50rank&columnsorttype1=DESC&columnsort2=&columnsorttype2=DESC",2," About
IBD",,"--")

...where I vary the "pCells" and "pRows" parameters as needed.
