As noted in the file description: "Note that you need to view an
iVolatility data display from CBOE in either IE or the EXCEL Web Query
process before using the add-in so that the add-in has a security cookie to
be able to access the data."

Another possibility -- if you are using version 2.1.2012.12.29 of the
add-in, tell me whether these works for you:

=smfGet888OptionQuote("QQQ","C","2/16/2013",,"HV10L")
=smfGet888OptionQuote("QQQ","C","2/16/2013",,"HV10LD")

If not, visit this web page with IE or the EXCEL Web Query dialog:

http://oic.ivolatility.com/oic_adv_options.j?exp_date=-1&ticker=QQQ

...and then run smfForceRecalculation and try again.

Let me know what happens.

If that does work, you can find documentation for that function in the
"Works in Progress" folder of the files area.

Actually, those two formulas don't even need the 2nd and 3rd parameters.
They can just be:

=smfGet888OptionQuote("QQQ",,,,"HV10L")
=smfGet888OptionQuote("QQQ",,,,"HV10LD")

Hi Randy,

The 5-minute data is only price and volume, for intraday charting. Day-based data is only updated at the end-of-day, unless I manually issue an update command.

> Another "quick" source you may want to look at is FinViz.
You can grab their entire stock coverage in one Internet access.

We've been using them for a while, but did not realize they had a data feed. I've not looked at the workbook you reference, so maybe you mean getting all of the data in a single SMF call.

> You may also want to look at the Zacks screener.

We used their site for quite a while, and even tried their Premium service, but found a lot of their data to be outdated and didn't like all of the daily junk mail and advertising they sent out. Like everyone else, it seems, they too use a proprietary (developed-in-house) sector/industry classification system, which doesn't follow any of the other major systems (Dow Jones/S&P, Bloomberg, etc.). And our tax dollars are hard at work maintaining yet another system that nobody in the equity markets uses (heavy sigh). And then there is the International system that the U.S. is not supporting. Grrrr. Since we obtain data from many different sites, we've not settled on a specific sector/industry system to use.

> Maybe a good question at this point is HOW do you use the ex-dividend date?

Just like you -- to be informed when an upcoming date is near. But we only pay close attention to it when it's for a security we are watching closely, and I've been updating these manually. They can be very profitable to trade around.

Thanks again for all of your help and suggestions, Randy. They are much appreciated.

Have a great week!

-Don

As I noted, I was using the add-in to extract ex-dividend dates from another, more reliable, source. But it is an issue if you are doing the 1400 securities. The advantage of the RCHGetYahooQuotes() function is that it can grab 200 multiple data items on 200 stocks in a single Internet access.

Not much use if the data isn't current, though. :(

However, not all of that data actually changes on 5-minute intervals, and ex-dividend dates of quarterly-paying stocks only change once per quarter. So why retrieve it every 5 minutes?

Another "quick" source you may want to look at is FinViz. You can grab their entire stock coverage in one Internet access. Check out the FinViz item in the LINKS area of the Yahoo group for more info.

You may also want to look at the Zacks screener. I sometimes just use a screening criteria of "Price > 5" and then choose which data items I want to see, and export data on about 6000 companies. For example, several of the useful data items Zacks has that Yahoo doesn't have on their CSV file are Next EPS Report date, sector, and industry:

Company Name
Ticker
Next EPS Report Date
Sector
Industry
Last Close

AGILENT TECH
A
20130213
Computer and Technology
ELEC TEST EQUIPTMENT

Basic Materials
MINING -NON FERR
9.03

AAC TECH HLDGS
AACAY
20130329
Computer and Technology
ELEC-MISC COMPONENTS

Unfortunately, neither FinViz nor Zacks have the ex-dividend date as a possible output field.

> provide this data, that SMF is already hooked into?

Maybe a good question at this point is HOW do you use the ex-dividend date? If you've been living with out-of-date info, it can't be a critical item for you?

It sounds to me like you should parse out the pieces of data you're retrieving, and retrieve them when they are needed and/or updated, instead of retrieving every piece of data simultaneously.

> Thank you for the reference to your "upcoming dividends workbook", which
> is available at the following link:
> SMF-Template-Upcoming-Dividend-Champions.xls

That is an example of me retrieving the data only as needed.

In fact, it ANTICIPATES the announcement of ex-dividend dates. For example, two of those in the table I cited earlier -- HCP and MSEX -- just announced the dividends on Friday. But HCP had an ex-dividend date last year of 2012-02-02 and MSEX was 2012-02-13. So I was expecting the declaration of those dividends, before they were announced. That's what that workbook is for.

I've got it set up to show me stocks where I'm expecting an ex-dividend date within the next 5 weeks. And it confirms for me whether one has been declared yet.

But since I'm only dealing with "Dividend Champions" in that workbook, they will be on a pretty regular schedule.

The following is a complete list of Yahoo CSV Feed Parameters, based on
multiple sources, as of Jan 28, 2013.

The parameters marked with an asterisk are not recognized by the SMF
add-in (as of Jan 28, 2013). If you use one of these in a
RCHGetYahooQuotes() function, where you are also requesting column
headings, the data being retrieved will get out of sync with the column
headings.

That's because all of those items (except for "l1", which the add-in does
use) can only be used by MyYahoo's portfolios, and have no context outside
of that. So I never implemented them in the add-in. I'm not sure Yahoo even
uses them -- have you generated a CSV file with those fields populated with
meaningful data?

One of the exercises I used to do with the RCHGetYahooQuotes() function is
to return data for every letter, as well as every letter with a number
appended. That's 286 combinations. There are a lot of data items I didn't
use, simply because the data wasn't useful, or unidentifiable. Many of them
are for HTML displays. For example, "g2" returns something like:

"3M Company Common (NYSE:MMM)
 - Trade: http://edit.finance.yahoo.com/ef?.intl=us&.done=http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv%3fs%3dMMM%26f%3dg2%26e%3d.csv

Hi Randy,

I'm sorry I starred l1 and l2 instead of l2 and l3 (heavy sigh), along with
leaving in some half-finished research. Just sent a follow-up message.

Yes, I am in a multi-day (week?) process of attempting to define exactly
what Yahoo returns, and in what format, along with what SMF displays, as I'm
seeing a lot of messed up data and don't know if it's Yahoo or SMF.

Yes, some of the starred fields contain valid data and yes, some of the
fields are Yahoo Portfolio specific (not of use in SMF). Off the top of my
head ... enter an invalid symbol and Yahoo returns the error in a string via
"e1". To me, it's useful information to know that the symbol I'm trying to
use is wrong.

Regardless of the usefulness of a particular parameter, if SMF chooses not
to recognize it, then it should place both a column heading and data value
in the column telling the user that this parameter is not supported by SMF.
Right now, SMF places a "--" in the column heading but does not place a data
value in the column itself, thus shifting HALF of the display (column
heading) by one column, leaving the data portion of the column unshifted. I
spent a lot of time documenting this and entering a long message via the
online group's Message function, but I never saw it come across in the email
feed. Did you see it?

Also, are you aware that Yahoo sometimes uses the thousands separator (yes,
a comma!!!) in numbers? If you read this before the market opens on
Tuesday, plug in AMAT, with "saa2a5bb2b3b4b6cc1c6c8dd1ee7e8e9" and column
headings. Yahoo returns an UNquoted value of 2,000 for Ask Size, which
places "2" in Ask Size and "0" in the next column, shifting all column data.
It doesn't look like SMF checks the number of items returned and split
(using ",") against the number of items requested by the user? If you check
this, and the two don't match, then you know Yahoo stuck a comma in where it
does not belong, and could do something of your own choice.

Thanks Randy,

-Don

Yup. But I thought the only one was float.

If you have multiple items that might have numeric fields with commas,
there would be multiple ways to parse them into individual fields. What I
wrote is a fairly simple CSV parser (in fact, it's my generic CSV parser),
but I will note that if you open the CSV file with those items in it, EXCEL
will also parse the items into separate columns.

It's a Yahoo error in the creation of the CSV file. For example, this:

http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=MMM&f=sf6&e=.csv

...returns:

"MMM", 684,453,000

Obviously, 4 fields in any definition of a CSV file. EXCEL agrees. :)

Yes, that's what Excel would do. However, Excel doesn't know how many data items the user asked for, but SMF does. All it has to do is check that number against the number of split items from the returned data, and if they do not agree, do something to let the user know the data is screwed up *somewhere* in this row. Even if it's only to put an asterisk in the very first field.
