is the SMF addin going to be updated to pull ADVFN data?

I'm not planning to update anything until they go to the new beta format...

They still have a warning that you need to use them to get current data.

Hi. I need instructions on how to download and install in excel 2010.

This is on the front page of the group, as well as in your "Welcome to the
group" message:

"The first step to using the add-in would be to visit the files area of the
group. You can download a ZIP file from the "Add-In Files" folder that
contains the add-in. Installation instructions and documentation of the
various functions can be found in the "Documentation" folder. Sample uses
of add-in functions can be found in the "Templates and Examples" folder.

Also, be sure to check out the "Links" area of the group for links to tips
and frequently asked questions."

Hi Randy. Thanks so much for all you do to continue to work on these incredible investment tools. I have been learning and using most of the functions over the past 2 months.

To speed up linking to my main portolio spreadsheets I use get yahoo quotes and the smfupdatedownloadtable. If you or anyone in the community have a min I have a few questions that I haven't found the answer on the discussions or links.

getyahooquotes
1.Continues to work well although I can't seem to get real time quotes. Any tips?

2.About 10% of my quotes are Cdn TSX stocks which work well with ".TO" symbol extension. The ex div date 'q' for cdn stocks is often very out of date. I assume this is a limitation of yahoo but any suggestions?

smfupdatedownloadtable
1. last price element 25 has started returning 'obsolete' the last 2 days. Has anyone else noticed this or should download a new clean version of the file to rebuild?

2. The major benefit of this is speed. My file is often very fast updating about 100 stocks and 30 elements in < 30 sec. Lately it slowed down considerably taking 10-15 mins for an update. My guess is that there is a particular element(s) added that are new providers which stall the process. Any thoughts to keep it running fast?

Thanks and I hope to continue to learn and contribute to this great community!

It's my understanding that if you're signed up for real-time quotes for
Yahoo, and have the IE security cookie enabled, the RCHGetYahooQuotes()
function returns real-time quotes.

But I have no first-hand experience with it.

2.About 10% of my quotes are Cdn TSX stocks which work well with ".TO"

Even U.S. stocks have out of date ex-dividend dates.

I don't follow Canadian stocks, so I'm not aware of what other sources
carry data on them.

I've been wanting to obsolete it for years. So now that MSN was returning
bad data for it (i.e. the previous day's closing price), I changed the
element definition to be obsolete.

RCHGetYahooQuotes() should be used for current quotes. It's faster, anyway,
even for a single quote.

If you watch smfUpdateDownloadTable run, you should be able to see which
elements are causing the delays, since you can watch it update. You can
make this easier by deleting all the data before you start, so it has to
refill everything from scratch.

I once had it slow to a crawl, and saw that it stopped for a minute or more
on each stock as it tried to retrieve the Zacks rating. When I visited the
site with my browser, I found out their site was down. So the delay was
that the add-in had to wait for the web page request to time out, each time
a new web page from their web site was requested.

I just uploaded beta version 2.1.2013.10.16 of the add-in to the "Works in Progress" folder of the FILES area of the group.

I made changes to the smfGetAdvFNElement() routine that should allow data to be retrieved, using their new URL scheme. That means RCHGetElementNumber() functions for AdvFN elements should also work.

It appears to work for both general templates in the FILES area.

However, I can only test changes using their "www" prefix. I don't know if other regional prefixes will work or not. Or whether you even NEED to use other regional prefixes any more.

And, of course, when they do go their new beta format, all bets are off until THAT gets stabilized.

Thanks Randy I really miss the ADVFn data. I've been getting by with the Gurufocus data but it just isn't the same.

Hello,

I am struggling with getting TTM Yield and other data on mutual funds from quote.morningstar.ca, for example, http://quote.morningstar.ca/quicktakes/fund/f_ca.aspx?t=RBF536.

Trying to get the TTM Yield via:
=0+smfStrExtr(RCHGetWebData("http://quote.morningstar.ca/quicktakes/fund/f_ca.aspx?t=RBF536","vkey:"),"TTM Yield:""","""") fails with "Error".

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

That's a dynamically generated web page. If you examine the source code of
the web page, you'll see that the TTM Yield data is NOT within the source
code. The add-in extracts data from the source code of web pages.

This is the static page that is used to load the data onto the dynamically
generated web page (M* appears to do this type of thing for each section of
the dynamic web pages now):

http://quotes.morningstar.com/fund/c-header?t=RBF536®ion=CAN&culture=en-CA&cur=CAD&productCode=can

So, to get the data, you'd need to do something like:

=smfConvertData(smfGetTagContent("
http://quotes.morningstar.com/fund/c-header?t=RBF536®ion=CAN&culture=en-CA&cur=CAD&productCode=can","span",1,"TTM
Yield"))

Hi Randy.

First of all, thanks for your great job! I need some hints about an extraction. I'm trying to retrive estimated sales for current and next fiscal years from Reuters. If I write a simple formula in excel, no problems.I retrieve the figures correctly.I.E.

=RCHGetTableCell("http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/analyst?symbol=AMZN";2;"Consensus Estimates Trend";"Sales";;;;5)

This formula gives estimated sales for the current year.

But, If I try to setup a new Element Number, in oder to recall the formula in an easier way, I obtain "error". For example,

13910;Reuters;Estimated Sales -- Current Year;=RCHGetTableCell("http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/analyst?symbol=~~~~~";2;"Consensus Estimates Trend";"Sales";;;;5)

when I write:

=RCHGetElementNumber("AMZN";13910)

I get error.

Could you please tell me where I'm failing??? This is driving me crazy.....

You can't use semi-colons as delimiters within the function in the element
definition. In an element definition, semi-colons are the delimiters
between each piece of the element definition.

For example, this element definition works for me:

13910;Reuters;Estimated Sales -- Current Year;=RCHGetTableCell("
http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/analyst?symbol=~~~~~",2,"Consensus
Estimates Trend","Sales";,,,5)

Yes!!!Great!! It works! Thank you very much Randy....I was looping.....I didn't realize the difference between semi-colons and colons....

Now I'm aware..:-)

I am interested in python that collects the same info.
Does it use the same element definitions?

To mhreyn and any others, also thanks in reply to Randy's alternate group suggestion:

(1.) I wrote a python script that fetches the same data fields Randy has encoded into his documentation.

(2.) My script works at a command line interface. It is not part of Excel. I import the data and then write out my own csv files, which can be manipulated in a second pass. My script is not merged into Excel directly.

(3.) This is an alternate mode of data retrieval for those who are willing to get into the weeds of programming python scripts. And that is not a trivial effort!

(4.) If anyone is interested in seeing what I did then I could either upload examples to the files section or you can email me directly at freebelvin@... mailto:freebelvin@....

Thanks,

I thought I might take this opportunity to describe what I've been doing, and the question in this post is closely related to my approach. First let me say that I do not in any way put this out as any form of technology competition! I only bring this up as a way of expanding people's awareness of what is possible.
> >

This leads to much more programming effort, but also provides much more flexibility in handling the data. In the example below, a script could be coded with the website URL and fields to extract and fetch the data on a schedule. The data could then be printed to the screen, or additional algorithms could be attached to generate alerts, perform follow-on calculations, etc. The possibilities are broad, but I admit, this does require a level of software skill. And I will comment that as a C programmer, learning python syntax has been quite an adventure for me.
