Add in for Excel is not working for some reason !!!!!

I am a newbie and i just joined this group because from what I read elsewhere the RCH add-in should be able to get me the data I need from Yahoo to my excel sheet.

I just downloaded RCH_Stock_Market_Functions-2.1.2010.08.02.zip file to my VISTA OS desktop and then unzipped it to SMF Add-in folder in the Program File. I then dbl clicked RCH_Stock_Market_Functions and, to the best of my knowledge nothing happened on any of my excel files. My excel files do have Add-ins Menu Item and the Excel add-ins do include couple other add-ins but I don't see anything in that list that seems to indicate this add-in - as of yet.

What did I do wrong? What should be my next steps in order to use this add-in to download needed data from YAHOO?

Thanks.

Check the "Documentation" folder in the files area.

Hello .... I am sorry if I am troubling you .... Based upon your suggestion, I did check in the documentation area and picked up pointers that led me thru the process of adding-in and as you can see from the attached image the add-in window now does indicate the proper add-in (stock market functions)  is available to Excel .... But then, what do I need to do download the necessary information from Yahoo? ... I tried everything I could think of ... any and all help is welcome ... Thx.....

Hi Randy ....

Slowly but surely I am getting there and I am now able to use your template for stocks .... Previously I had missed the "array" feature of excel that you do mention in the documentation area ....

I have now gone over Message 2281 discussions for options - calls and puts ... I do need to figure this one out for my needs ... In your response to the Calls/Puts option the example of IBM is fine except that I need the same information (just as I do as for stocks) in a similar array format for a select group of Call and Put options however, I do not need columns N thru R for the selected group of options ....

In that vein, It seems to me that understanding the format and code parameters for this call - http://finance.yahoo.com/q/op?s="&$B3&"&k="&$C3,1,">Expires",,,,1 - is essential .... is this documented somewhere? ....

Finally, I do not also understand how does {RCHGetYahooQuotes(B4:B203,C2:V2)} figure out what "data elements" (in Columns C thru R) are to be grabbed? ...

I am sure a little bit more of your hand holding would get me there ... I appreciate your help very very much ....

If you need option quotes, use the new smfGetOptionQuotes() (and related)
functions. I had to write it when Yahoo stopped providing option quotes
through their CSV interface -- which is what RCHGetYahooQuotes() uses.

In the documentation for the function. Except for the URL coding of course
-- that's standard URL coding, unrelated to the add-in.

Finally, I do not also understand how does

Whatever it finds in columns C thru R. It uses the Yahoo codes that are
shown in the documentation of the function.

Also, be sure to check out the "Links" area of the group for tips and FAQs.

Randy .. Thanks once again ... most of my questions have been answered and the link and faqs did help ....thank you so very much for doing this ... you mentioned "new smfGetOptionQuotes()" as a solution for my need for option quotes .... when i went to this file - http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/smf_addin/files/Add-In%20Files/smf%20add-in/     ....  it says the folder is empty .... i did find documentation of some related material in "work in progress" folder, but not the executable code for the add-in etc ... may be that's the way it is .. ie, you are still working at it and I wish you all the very best and am thankful for all your efforts ... plz. let me know if I am on the right track .. Thx ...

That folder was created by someone else -- I just deleted it.

The "Documentation" folder is a main folder on the "Files" page:

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/smf_addin/files/Documentation/

If you want to view the VBA code, just go to the VBA project in EXCEL. It's
all open source.

The documentation in the "Works in Progress" folder is for new functions
that are in the beta version of the add-in that is available in that
folder. In fact, you'll probably want all of the updated *.txt files from
that folder -- I've had to redefine a number of data element this year due
to web site changes. Or, if you want the new functions, just use the new
zip file there and you'll get all new updated files. You can check the
change log in that folder to see if there are changes that are of interest.

Attached is the Picture Image of the success so far by using  {=smfGetOptionQuotes(B5:B203,c2:h2,1)} .... your help and wonderful documentation has taken me this far .... so now,  does there exist an equivalent version of  SMF Template-RCHGet YahooQoutes()  for a selected group of quotes using smfGetOptionQuotes()? ... if not then, is there a future possibility? .... Thanks a million  for all your help so far ....

Your two errors on the image are from:

1. The "%" data code item is only valid if you are using MSN as your
data source. The default is Yahoo, so it's not a recognized data code in
your usage.

2. I mixed up the documentation at one point -- the "u" data code is
something I added after the official release, so it's in the documentation,
but only available in the Beta version of the add-in from the "Works in
Progress" folder. There also are more updated to that documentation in the
"Works in Progress" folder, for additional changes in the Beta version.

I haven't uploaded any templates for smfGetOptionQuotes(), sorry. There are
so many different permutations, it would be difficult to have one. It's one
reason the documentation for the function has a lot of examples. Also,
there are some additional options functions in the Beta version of the
add-in, as well as having Google added as a data source. Information on two
of the new functions:

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/smf_addin/message/14130

Also, I do have a few options templates in the files area of this Yahoo
group:

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/justcoveredcalls

Another thing you can look at is using another function to grab data. For
example, array-entered over a range:

=RCHGetHTMLTable("http://finance.yahoo.com/q/op?s=MMM&m=2012-07
","Expiration:",1,"Highlighted",-1)

...will get you both the call and put tables from Yahoo for ticker MMM for
the July expiration in 2012.

Thx. to you Randy, I am so far ahead now (at the end of this day) from ground zero where I started ... In my previous email, the intention was not to dwell on the errors as much as to show how much I was able to accomplish with your support .... I believ I am getting the feel for it and hopefully, this will continue to grow .... Thx. also for a wealth of information you provided related to this pursuit ...

How can I get the historical last trading day for each month?

I think the easiest way would be to download the historical quotes for one
of the major indexes, then extract the last trading day of each month from
that downloaded data.
