Subject: [smf_addin] Find best ITM and OTM Call option for Covered Calls
Hi Guys,
I am looking for a good way or spreadsheet (if it already exists) that will
identify the best in the money and out of the money calls to write on a
portfolio of 5 - 10 symbols to help me write buy-writes or covered calls.
Does this exist already or do you guys have recommendations on how to set
something like this up? I do not need to see all available options, but
would look at highest return on if option was exercised and highest return
if unexercised as the "best" calls and with a max duration of 45 days.

Randy - thanks for the reply. I figured out that the problem was originating from a setting in Internet Explorer. If you have security settings set to not allow automatic downloads then it will retrieve and display the HTML and not the CSV. Hope that helps anyone with a similar problem.

Hello,
I'm a new user and am hoping someone can help me with the following:
Using: =RCHGetElementNumber(A2, 54) should return "Current P/E Ratio" but the value retrieved is different from the value stated on MSN Money's site (US site). As an aside has anyone else noticed that MSN Money (Canada) and US site quotes
Also, when using .to to denot Canadian Stocks some data is not retrieved; shows up as an "error" or "NA". (Yield, PE, Sector to name a few)
Also, what is the variable number for current price of a stock? I found last price (previous day's closing price) but can't find current price.
Thank you in advace for taking the time to help. :)

Ticker symbol please?
Did you look on the correct web page? The add-in gets its data from the
print page.
I just checked this and it appears correct.
=RCHGetElementNumber("MMM", 54)

Again, examples would help. Otherwise, I have nothing to look at.
But, in all probability, MSN just doesn't carry the data. If you get "NA",
that should be what MSN has posted on the print page.

Unfortunately, when MSN revamped the web page last year, they started
posting the previous day's closing price as the "Last Price" on the print
page.
You should use the RCHGetYahooQuotes() function for current quotes. When
you array-enter it over a range, it can get numerous data items on up to
200 stocks with a single Internet access. Much faster than using
RCHGetElementNumber() to extract data from one web page for each ticker
symbol.

Sorry about the layout. When i posted the message it deleted a bunch of spaces. I've since used RCHGetYahooQuotes() template you provided under files. That works much better. I followed the instructions and it filled the array perfect.
What i don't understand is how to use the CA paramter for Canadian Quotes and NOW() paramter for updating. Would you mind posting how you would change the formula in the array to accomodate those paraamters?

No. The print page is this:
http://investing.money.msn.com/investments/stock-report?CR=1&AF=1&IH=1&AIE=1&AIR=1&FRH=1&FRK=1&ISA=1&ISQ=1&BSA=1&BSQ=1&CFA=1&CFQ=1&TYS=1&ITT=1&ITP=1&Type=Equity&Symbol=KO
For most elements, you can find the web page and element number comes from
with:
=RCHGetElementNumber("P-URL", 54)
Oddly enough, that page reports BOTH the 22.2 and the 21.76 values. It's
just a matter of which one the add-in is picking up.

You've lost me there. 13666 and 13685 are both Reuters' elements.
However, note that if you need to look up the web page on MSN for Canadian
issues. a ".TO" suffix on Yahoo would need a "CA:" prefix on MSN. That is,
Yahoo's "RY.TO" is "CA:RY" on MSN. The add-in does attempt to do some
"fixing" of symbol issues like this, but I only use U.S. stocks and don't
know of all the ins and outs of such discrepancies.
To see if a translation is occurring automatically for you, you can always
try this:
=smfConvertYahooTicker("RY.TO","MSN")
...which will show you what ticker symbol the add-in would try to use on
MSN if you use RY.TO as your ticker symbol. The add-in is standardized on
Yahoo.

I'd suggest a run through the LINKS area of the group. A lot of tips and
FAQ there. A lot of element numbers are presented in templates, as they
appear (or appeared) on the web pages. So it may be easier to see some of
their issues, or understand the elements better there.
I don't do anything with Canadian equities, so have little familiarity with
their issues.

I have downloaded the Price-Performance-Data-Retreival-V3.xls sheet from the files section. This sheet gives the 1 wee, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month and 12 month returns (Momentum) of stocks from Yahoo. It seems to be using arays, but not sure what those are or how to use them.
I wanted to transpose all cells. It has Stocks listed in colums and the different returns listed in rows. I wanted to have Stocks in the rows.
When I select all and then paste with Transpose, it looks correct in layouts, but the data no longer updates correctly. Only the 1 week return is correct. The 1 month, 3 month and so on are exact copies of the 1 month. However, the formulas appear to be correct.
Any ideas?

Copy and paste transpose doesn't work as you would want for array-entered
functions. It will transpose the function itself, but the cell references
and returned data will just plop into the resulting range without
themselves being transposed. You'd need to redo the formula.
I just uploaded a this version:

Is it what you are trying to do?

Hello Randy
that is exactly what I was trying to do. Thank you. It looks just like mine did, but mine did not function correctly. I have a lot to still learn about excel :)
