Hello,
It was long ago but I thin this may be part of the Options in Excel. Had a friend it happened to. I looked at the options, but can not see it, unless it is simply View/Status Bar.

Eric,
If indeed your status bar is showing you should be able to right click
on any empty area there and select from the options that you mentioned
in the context menu. i.e. sum. and the selected item should appear
back where you're used to seeing it.
