silly mistake ?

Hi,

I bought Excel 2010 (German edition) now and installed the smf_addin.
There could have been something going wrong meanwhile.
When I try to open the link in line 1286 of the "Elements Definitions" - sheet another sheet opens yet being all filled with the #name? error, the content of the first cell being

='http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/Program Files\SMF Add-In\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla'!RCHGetElementNumber(Ticker;1286)

which for me does not make sense, as the addin is on my harddisk.

After a while a message box opens saying (about) connection target could not be found.

Earlier I got a sheet where one half of the cells were showing "error" the other half seemingly meaningful percent data. As I initially had the addin file in directory C:\program files\SMF AddIn\Rch_stockmarket functions, I thought I transfer it to C:\program files\SMF AddIn, because somewhere is written, it shoul be in C:\program files\SMF AddIn.
Afterwards I did not get these nice percent numbers anymore.

I tried to deinstall the SMF_AddIn but found only the possibility to inactivate it.

My guess would be to deinstall Office 2010 and reinstall and then tackle the "error" problem again.

Regards,

leif

Check the "Links" area of the group and look for an item on location errors
(#NAME?). This can be a common issue because of how EXCEL handles add-ins.

Thank you for the timely response. My short answer is that I DON'T need all that data. I am, in fact, using a separate template to perform individual security analysis. When I started seeing errors in that model, I wanted to try a comprehensive test to see if it was the source(s) or my application of the functions. That "test" is what I asked about. But now that I understand a bit more of the functionality, I believe I can continue on my original quest with a bit more confidence. Thanks for the help.

Yet another installation question

Sorry, I've searched, but can't find an answer.

I unzipped the installation files to my desktop and installed the add in in Excel from there. C:\Users\Mark\Desktop\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions-2.1.2012.02.02

Later I moved the installation to C:\Program Files\RCH AddIn 2.1.2012.02.02\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla

When I installed from this location, excel asked if I wanted to delete the first installation from the list. Yes.

I deleted the first folder from the desktop.

All fine until I shut down the compute and then reopen. When I launch Excel it gives an alert saying it can't find C:\Users\Mark\Desktop\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions-2.1.2012.02.02 and all RCH functions now show #name?.

If I use the find and replace and then some other manual stuff I can get everything back together again, but have to repeat with every reboot of the computer.

Any help appreciated.

ps: How does one provide financial support to this site? It is a life saver....

Go to the "Links" area of the group and look for the item on location
errors (#NAME?). The "find and replace" process is something that has to be
done once. Once you save the workbook, it will have all references pointing
to your location of the add-in. Unfortunately, it's how EXCEL does things.

I actually have the smfFixLinks macro assigned to a button. It usually
fixes all of the link errors I run into when I open up a workbook that uses
a different location.

As far as financial support, I usually just ask people to "Pay it Forward"
and send something to a worthy charity. Share the wealth. :)

Adding downloaded templates to tabs in one Excel workbook

Posted by: "bradleystipp@ymail.com" btstipp@gmail.com   bradleystipp@ymail.com

Wed Feb 22, 2012 7:30 am (PST)

I have downloaded various templates from the files section and they have been installed and work but are in separate workbooks. When I try to copy and paste (paste all) to a blank tab to consolidate within one workbook, I get the Dialog Box that says "A formula or sheet you want to move or copy contains the name 'Ticker', which already exists on the destination worksheet. Do yo want to use this version of the name? If yes, click yes. To rename the range referred to in the formula or worksheet, click No, and enter a new name in the Name Conflict dialog box."

Is there a workaround for this? I would like to have all of the various templates within one workbook for simplicity's sake.

Thank you.

The dialog is giving you the workaround -- either use the original name or
give it a new one. You have to resolve the conflict one way or another.

RCHGetYahooHistory in a loop

Posted by: "dmitchelspsscom" dmitchell@systat.com   dmitchelspsscom

Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:18 am (PST)

Hi Randy,

I've been using your macro for some time and it has been very useful. Thank you. However the way I have done it is very inefficient.
For each ticker I have a separate set of cocde and I want to replace this with one set of code in a loop. I've tried two different ways.

My system is:

Windows 7, Office 2010
The latest version of your SMF add-in
Stock Market Functions Add-ins checked in File, Options, Manage Excel Add-ins
Also checked there Analysis Tool Pak, Analysis Tool Pak - VBA, Solver Add-in

Case 1. Use Formula Array

The following runs fine with Ticker strings in cells O2 and O3

Range("A1:B738").Select
Selection.FormulaArray = _
"=RCHGetYahooHistory(O2,YEAR(TODAY()-1062),MONTH(TODAY()-1062),DAY(TODAY()-1062),YEAR(TODAY()),MONTH(TODAY()),DAY(TODAY()),,""DA"",1,,1)"

Range("C1:C738").Select
Selection.FormulaArray = _
"=RCHGetYahooHistory(O3,YEAR(TODAY()-1062),MONTH(TODAY()-1062),DAY(TODAY()-1062),YEAR(TODAY()),MONTH(TODAY()),DAY(TODAY()),,""A"",1,,1)"

But nothing that I have tried making the Ticker a variable works. The entire string in quotes, including the variable name,
gets placed into each cell

Case 2. I searched your Yahoo Groups site and found the following which is exactly what I want.

Dim sItems As String
Dim oCell As Range
sItems = "D"
For Each oCell In [B4:Z4]
If oCell.Value2 = "" Then Exit For
Range(oCell.Offset(1, 0), oCell.Offset(1000, 0)) = RCHGetYahooHistory(oCell.Value2, pResort:=1, pItems:=sItems, pDim1:=1000, pDim2:=1)
sItems = "A"
Next oCell

I set the worksheet up exactly as described but upon running I get "Compile error. Sub or Function not defined" with RCHGetYahooHistory highlighted.

I don't understand why the function is not defined as it certainly was in the first set of code above.

Any help you can give will be very much appreciated.

Dick

In order for your "Case 2" to work, you need to set up the add-in as a
reference library for the VBA project. That will makes all of its functions
available to your VBA project.

The reason the function exists in your "Case 1" is because it is executing
within the EXCEL worksheet, not within the VBA project. Having the add-in
installed for the worksheet doesn't make it available for VBA.

Could you give me an example please. This error seems to be based on how fast the information is retrieved from the internet verses the next line of code executing before the information is completely there. In a VBA routine, how do wait for the retrival of information befor resuming execution of the subroutine? This can't be a unique issue. An examlpe of how to handle this would be appriciated.

About the only way would be some type of VBA routine...

I've not had the issue, so I'm not sure exactly what you'd need. But take a
look at item 9.2 in the "Links" area of the group. I think something like
that, to iterate over your download data, to see what is missing, would
probably do the trick. I'm just not sure how to identify when something is
missing? Not a date in the first column, maybe?

The add-in does wait for the Internet to respond, so it waits before going
to the next line of code.

Recently, I have had an infrequent +issue in my browser where I go to view
some historical quotes and Yahoo tells me there are none. But if I refresh
the web page, they show up. The same thing could be happening with the
add-in -- Yahoo is occasionally sending an empty file or an error message
instead of the CSV file.

You had it right.  Yahoo was occasionally sending me blank files - no data.  When I tried to process an empty file I got errors.  Now I am set up to check for empty files and everything is working very nicely.  I'm impressed with how fast it is.  Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Dan

The same thing could be happening with the add-in -- Yahoo is occasionally sending an empty file or an error message instead of the CSV file.

Just tell the function to skip down to the annual section before searching
for the line items. For example, to get the first FQ of Revenues:

=RCHGetTableCell("https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:IBM&fstype=ii
",1,">Revenue")

...and to get the fiirst FY of Revenues:

=RCHGetTableCell("https://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:IBM&fstype=ii
",1,"id=""incannualdiv""",">Revenue")
