Sorry, I didn't intend to overload the servers, nor do it routinely as I only need to do it 2-4 times per year at most

I couldn't use a screener to get rid of stocks first coz the first screen of the action score is the Piotroski F score, which includes so many variables.. There isn't a single screener with the f-score available :) , otherwise I wouldnt need to painstakingly build one by myself.. @.@

secondly, my data are all from only 3 webpages of wsj for each company, mainly income statement, cashflow and balance sheet only :) , most data are contained within balance sheet

so in total there's only 3 webpage for example:
http://quotes.wsj.com/MY/XKLS/MAGNI/financials/annual/income-statement http://quotes.wsj.com/MY/XKLS/MAGNI/financials/annual/income-statement

If automating it isn't allowed, then I won't do it, just asking as I'm trying to let it run while i go to school and hopefully its done when I'm back, thats all :)

Hope you don't misunderstand the intention of me creating this ranking, it's only for my own testing and learning purpose to see whether the action score works here in my country..

Testing isn't possible without a "point-in-time" backtester. Testing
"live" with just a few datapoints won't mean much.

There are screeners with Piotroski. Just not free. And not all for non-US
stocks.

Your Piotroski rating won't be that good, because you could be computing it
on extremely stale data as you're getting the annual financial statements,
and WSJ doesn't carry enough quarters of data to compute it from quarterly
financial statements. For example, the link you cite below is a company
whose fiscal year ends in April, so your "Annual' extractions are for data
from April of 2015, more than a year old.

Hmm.. firstly, I thought that Piotroski score should only be calculated using annual data, I've read this from oldschoolvalue as well.. , they use the "year" data

Secondly, I don't mind if it is a bit stale data, as I am trying to see if the screeners are able to get good companies. I can check that by my other excel template, which can be used for only 1 stock, but will get their fundamentals data, plus, I know of quite a few experienced investors in my country, which I could as to verify whether these high action score companies are good.

So, by my own other single stock template plus asking other experienced investors whom I know are really good at investing, I could roughly know whether this ranking is giving me really good companies or some bad apples included :)

Profitability The first four criteria of the Piotroski Score count towards the profitability.
1. Positive net income compared to last year (1 point)
2. Positive operating cash flow in the current year (1 point)
3. Higher return on assets (ROA) in the current period compared to the ROA in the previous year (1 point)
4. Cash flow from operations greater than Net Income (1 point)
Leverage, Liquidity and Source of Funds Points 5-7 of the Piotroski Score, looks at the health of the balance sheet in teams of debt and the number of shares outstanding.
5. Lower ratio of long term debt to in the current period compared value in the previous year (1 point)
6. Higher current ratio this year compared to the previous year (1 point)
7. No new shares were issued in the last year (1 point)
Operating Efficiency The last two factors of the Piotroski Score looks the operating efficiency.
8. A higher gross margin compared to the previous year (1 point)
9. A higher asset turnover ratio compared to the previous year (1 point)

Randy, do you know if SMF-ADDIN works with the win10 Edge browser?

Logging in with Edge or FireFox won't do anything for EXCEL or the add-in. You need to log in with either IE or use the EXCEL Web Query dialog. The add-in uses Windows routines that are common to IE and EXCEL when accessing the Internet, so it needs an IE security cookie.

Randy - I have been using your VBA code successfully for a long time, but since a recent upgrade to Excel 2016/Win 10 I have now been receiving this error <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL=http://www.gurufocus.com/membership/upgrade.php?redir=/download_dataset.php?symbol="any symbol"">

I am a premium subscriber to Guru and have my login credentials saved under both Firefox and Edge. But the error continues. Is this Excel 2016 problem? Are you aware of any workaround?

As far as I know, EXCEL and the add-in only shares settings and files with
IE.

On my new Win10/Office 2016 PC Randy's VBA code I use in my models (listed at bottom) to call for Guru financials download now hits back with this error:
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL=http://www.gurufocus.com/membership/upgrade.php?redir=/download_dataset.php?symbol=AA"> (as an example for ticker AA). This says that i need to register for Guru Premium or provide credentials. I am a premium member and have saved my logins in all possible installed browsers on my new machine (IE, Edge, Firefox)

I double checked that the VBA code works fine on my Office 2010 and Office 2007 equipped machines.

Is this an Excel 2016 glitch? Did anyone else encounter this issue or have a solution?

Any help would be appreciated?

Vlad

SAMPLE VBA Code

Set wb1 = ActiveWorkbook
sTicker = [TICKER].Value
If sTicker = "" Then MsgBox ("ENTER TICKER")
Workbooks.Open FileName:="http://www.gurufocus.com/download_dataset.php?symbol=" & sTicker ' downloads and opens GuruFocus Dataset for the ticker selected
Sheets("Historical Financial").Name = sTicker & "-Financial&quot;
Sheets(sTicker & "-Financial&quot;).Copy Before:=wb1.Sheets(1)

I often say it's preferred to log into sites using the EXCEL Web Query
Dialog. That's because sometimes the IE object that EXCEL (and the add-in)
use may not be the same version of IE that the browser is. I don't know how
they get out of sync. It may or may not apply to your situation?

BTW, I now use this to grab the full financials instead of downloading the
XLS file:

=smfGetCSVFile("
http://www.gurufocus.com/download_financials_in_CSV.php?symbol="&B2)

It has more data and is much faster and cleaner in getting the data. For
MMM, that gets me 20 annual periods, 80 quarterly periods, and TTM, as well
as some current values of different ratios.

>> Try these steps:

1. Go to the add-in manager and uncheck the add-in (i.e. existing pointed to location)
2. Exit EXCEL (to purge any connection to the add-in)
3. Restart EXCEL
4. Go to the add-in manager and put the add-in back into the list
5. Exit EXCEL (to save the new settings)
6. Restart EXCEL <<

Thank you for this. I was having problems with RCHGetYahooQuotes - it would return the Sector, but nothing else, such as Dividend Yield, Exchange, Trailing P/E, etc. I knew it was communicating, because it returned the Sector. But the others.....??

So I searched the board and found the above from a post by Randy H. Worked like a charm. Haven't a clue why, but good outcomes always make me happy.
