Hello Elder,
If you would like to see the last 10 years of annual dividends, both as
numbers and also a Histogram, I can send you the Excel piece that should
work for you. Two things: Make sure you have Randy's SMF add-in, "added-in"
to your Excel, and, tell me what cell letter & number (e.g. C3) you input
the ticker symbol.
Regards,
Marc

I downloaded and tested the spreadsheet. Several of my High Yield stock show
as error (AGNC,AINV). Apparently, ADvFN does not support those stock.
I, also, noticed what I think is an error in your labeling.

Hello Kermit,
I did the FY1-FY10 backwards to make the chart correct. And, it depends on how you look at it. If you look at FY1 as the first year of the 10 year dividend trend, and FY10 as the 10th (or latest), then it is correct. Also, you can see if the spreadsheet and graph are correct by checking against this site:
http://financials.morningstar.com/ratios/r.html?t=JNJ
And, yes, you are right, apparently some stocks don't show up. I get frustrated with this, but, it is what it is...

Actually, the problem is inconsistent labeling by AdvFN. The add-in
searches for a line item label of "Dividends Paid Per Share (DPS)", but
AGNC has a line item label of "Dividends Paid Per Share" (No DPS on it).
That's why the error occurs.
An alternative method would be to use the smfGetAdvFNElement() function.
Then, more than 10 years of data could also be retrieved. For example:
=smfGetAdvFNElement("MMM","A",1,">Dividends Paid Per Share")
For "MMM", this allowed me to grab 20 years of data, by varying the 1 from
1 to 20. But AGNC only had 5 years of history available.

Thanks, Randy. That works fine on my end, too. What does the "A" mean? Is it the top of the table for AdvFN?

Hi Randy,
I can not download the market data on the number of advancing / declining issues from Yahoo anymore. The yahoo market data page with the advancing / declining issues seems to look different than I remember. The data appears at the bottom of the page (whereas I seem to remember is was all on it's own page before). http://finance.yahoo.com/stock-center/ http://finance.yahoo.com/stock-center/
I am wondering if this is the reason that it is not working or I have some other problem. The excel macro I use also downloads the historical prices from yahoo. That part is still working fine. Any ideas? Thanks for your help as always.

Don

Yahoo did indeed change the Market Statistics web page. Not only did they
change the web page address and structure, but the data now has to be
extracted out of JavaScript code, instead of a normal HTML table.
I just uploaded a new smf-elements-2.txt file to the "Works in Progress"
folder of the FILES area of the group, updating the element definitions for
elements #13822 thru #13861.
Best practice:
1. Exit EXCEL
2. Download the new version of the element definition file
3. Replace the older version of this file in your add-in's file folder
with the newer downloaded version
4. Restart EXCEL

Hello Folks,
For some odd reason, whatever file I download from the FILES folder, it ends up not working for me. It will say links cannot be updated, and the spreadsheet then turns to question marks, etc. Frustrating, because I just noticed that there are some neat spreadsheets in there that I want to cut & paste into my work...
Is there a way to fix this?
Regards,
Marc

See the "Location Errors" item in the LINKS area of the group.
Also, there is now an smfFixLinks macro that is part of the add-in, which
can automate the "Find and Replace" process mentioned in the "Location
Errors" item. I use it frequently when EXCEL can't resolve the add-in
links. I have that macro assigned to a toolbar button, so it's easily
accessible.

Does anyone know what source data yahoo uses for their stock charts?
Yahoo does not seem to be using historical close prices nor are they using historical Adjusted close prices for their charts. For example, if you look at PCG on July 1, 1980, the data looks like this:
Date,Open,High,Low,Close,Volume,Adj Close
1980-07-01,5.28,5.34,5.26,5.34,84600,0.04
However, on the interactive chart, Yahoo shows this price on July 1, 1980:
2.6695
What is going on?
Thanks,
Matt

I can't explain the oddity with PCG.
Generally, Yahoo's historical adjusted price is used for stocks but the UNadjusted (raw) close is used for some tickers (many bond funds, for example). They don't identify this in the charts. At one time, their SMAs (and probably other metrics) for stocks were calculated with the raw close even though the chart was showing the adjusted closing prices (argh). Not sure if this is still an issue. I no longer use them for long-term charts preferring instead to grab their historical raw prices with SMF and chart them myself (adjusting for splits).

At the bottom of the chart page in Yahoo, it says:
"Historical chart data and daily updates provided by Commodity Systems,
Inc. (CSI)."
But I have noticed their charts are not always consistent with the adjusted
historical quotes they provide. In the case of PCG, they seem to have
adjusted for the single 2-for-1 split, but not for dividends.
