Re: two RCHGetElementNumber calls return "Error" message

Thanks Randy. I copied your new  smf-elements-1.txt file from "Works in
Progress" folder, and replaced it with the one that's under "C:\Program
Files\SMF Add-In\". However, when I ran this model, RCHGetElementNumber(Ticker,
1) still returns "Error". I suspect that it's because Excel is referring to the
add in file at some other locations (I used to get the add in from a different
folder). Is there a way to completely unload "SMF Add-In" and then reload it?

Thanks and regards,
Ping

You probably just need the new smf-elements-1.txt file from the "Works in
Progress" folder. It has the latest element definitions for MSN elements.

Exit and restart EXCEL.

Check out the "Location errors" entry in the "Links" area of the Yahoo
group.

I stopped using the "Edit Links" option in EXCEL to fix unresolved links,
because it never seemed to work quite right. You need to manually edit
things to resolve links. Or, try running the smfFixLinks macro. I use it
whenever I need to fix unresolved links.

The quickest way to see if the add-in is installed:

=RCHGetElementNumber("Version")

explanation requested on cookies, IE9, Excel, Firefox and IBD

hi,
i use the ibd stock checkup template many times a week, and in a variety of ways. i've seen that if i have an ibd stock checkup webpage open in firefox, then log in to an ibd webpage with ie9, then my firefox login gets cancelled. i don;t like that behavior, but that's the way it is - ibd's way of enforcing only on user per paid account.

my difficulty is that sometimes the ibd checkup template can return all errors; my understanding is that to restore functionality to the excel template, i need to login to ibd via ie9 so that an appropriate cookie gets stored on my computer. but doing so doesn't always seem to work. i've also notices at times that i can be logged in to ibd using firefox, can type a new ticker in the excel template, get results in the template, yet stay logged in my firefox ibd session.
so, i don;t quite understand what's going on an am looking for an explanation.
regarding cookies, is there a firefox ibd cookie stored where firefox puts cookies and an ie9 ibd cookie where ie puts cookies. does the firefox ibd cookie get deleted when i log in to ibd using ie9? can i save master copies of each cookie in say my documents folder and then copy the appropriate one back to the magic location when i want to use either ibd with either firefox or ie9/excel?
i'm willing to put up with some minor annoyances/gyrations in order to continue 1. using firefox as my web browser and 2. using the ibd stock checkup template.
i suspect the same behavior would apply if google chrome was my default browser, right?
thanks much,
mike

Google Chrome and FireFox cookies would be irrelevant. But, yes, they have
separate cookies from IE.

Because IE and EXCEL are both Microsoft products, they use the same
Internet engine. And the add-in uses the Microsoft Internet Engine to
access the Internet. That's why the IE cookies, settings, and Temporary
Internet Files are all tied in to the add-in's usage of the Internet.

I, too, have been a little peeved that when I log into IBD with FireFox, it
typically logs me out of my IE session (and vice versa). I'm not sure why
they should care that I'm using two different browsers to access their
site. But, as you note, it's probably the way they've decided to make sure
the account is only being used by a single user.

But I have no idea why sometimes both FireFox and IE seem to be working at
the same time. It happens so infrequently, and I don't really use it all
that often, so I haven't seen any pattern. It may have something to do with
whether the IE used by EXCEL is the same IE used as a browser -- I'm not
sure both always get updated to the same version.

You might be able to "fake it" by copying files, which might work for a
short time. I guess it depend on how much of a bother it is to log in each
way. Another option would be to automate the login with VBA within EXCEL,
but using the IE object.

an additional item i don;t understand:
1. i was logged in to ibd via ie9. firefox was not open.
2. inside excel with the stock template open as one of the sheets in the xls file, i did a 'get external data', 'from web', typed investors.com and logged in. then i close that window. i typed in one ticker and got results in the tempplate. then i typed in a different valid ticker and got all errors.
3. doing this logged me off my ie9/ibd session.

still confused........

I can't explain (2), but (3) might be the issue I mentioned -- that the IE
used by "Get External Data" isn't IE 9, so it looks to IBD like two
different browsers.

I'm not sure how they get out of sync, but I have had several people note
that logging in with the EXCEL Web Query works and logging in with their IE
browser doesn't. I'm only suspecting that they are two separate versions of
IE when such a situation occurs.

thanks for the comments.
regarding 'Another option would be to automate the login with VBA within EXCEL, but using the IE object.', how would i go about doing that. do you have examples? i'd be fine with an auto-run-on-open macro in the ibd template file that did an ibd login.
if it logged on my firefox ibd session, oh well.
thanks,
mike

You should be able to find plenty of examples using Google. One example,
something like:
