Re: Financial data lag time

Apologies for resurrecting such an old thread.

I am currently building a DCF spreadsheet using the 'Cash_Flow_v17' Financial Import sheet as a starting point, which pulls data from MSN for annual and quarterly income statement, balance sheet, etc. items.

What I have noticed is that the update frequency between the various sources of data seems to vary quite dramatically. For example I came across a number of companies who's annual/quarterly data is out of date by at least a month on MSN.

Does anyone have a suggestion on comment as to the best source for raw financial statement?

Critical would be:
-timely updates of quarterly/annual data (AdvFN seems to be quite good in this regard, perhaps better than MSN?)
-standardized formatting of data across companies (This is one of the reasons I like MSN)
-Accuracy of data obviously, and
-As much details as possible, i.e. doesn't just aggregate a number of line items into a single entry

I was quite happy with MSN, particularly as the author of the Cash_Flow_v17 spreadsheet has done a lot of the leg work already, but I am concerned that in some cases the data will be a month or more out of date - this is my biggest concern. From experience as AdvFN better in this regard? Others I've looked at like Morningstar, Yahoo! etc. seem to be even worse, so I don't think they're an option.

"version" showed me the file it was trying to pull from, and I was able to fix it. I had tried to fix it a few ways, and as a result have about 3 different files where the add-in is saved. This one did not have the elements saved in it. Randy... your a genius.

What does FY1, FY2, etc mean?

In using your RCHGetElementNumber function, say for items 213, 214, 215..etc...I see return on equity fy1, fy2, etc. Is this past year 1, past year 2, etc...or is it an estimate for forward year 1, 2, etc.

If it is an estimate, where can I get the actual roe's for the past 5 years individually?

thx.

FY1 = 1st Fiscal Year (i.e. most recent)
FY2 = 2nd Fiscal Year
Etc.

So they would not be estimates.

For what it's worth, I am also getting "Error" returned for any MSN data elements.

This is what I get for:
=RCHGetElementNumber("Version")
Stock Market Functions add-in, Version 2.1.2012.04.07 (C:\Program Files (x86)\SMF Add-in; 1)

=RCHGetElementNumber("MMM",3)
Error

=smfGetAParms(3)
MSN;Exchange;http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/research/sreport.asp?CR=1&AF=1&IH=1&AIE=1&AIR=1&FRH=1&FRK=1&ISA=1&ISQ=1&BSA=1&BSQ=1&CFA=1&CFQ=1&TYS=1&ITT=1&ITP=1&Type=Equity&Symbol=~~~~~;1;QUICK FACTS;EXCHANGE; ; ;0;0;0;0

=smfGetAParms(25)
MSN;Last Price;http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/research/sreport.asp?CR=1&AF=1&IH=1&AIE=1&AIR=1&FRH=1&FRK=1&ISA=1&ISQ=1&BSA=1&BSQ=1&CFA=1&CFQ=1&TYS=1&ITT=1&ITP=1&Type=Equity&Symbol=~~~~~;1;STOCK ACTIVITY;LAST PRICE; ; ;0;0;0;0

I visited the MSN web site for the MMM url below and was not redirected.

Non-MSN data comes in fine for the non-random sample of 3 element numbers I tried (Google, Earnings.com, AdvFN-A).

Software: Window 7 64-bit, Office 2010 32-bit (and Office 2007 32-bit on a different pc)

Thank you for your work on this add-in. It's been a life-saver.

It's because you don't have the new element definitions in the
smf-elements-1.txt file from the "Works in Progress" folder of the Files
area. I had to redefine all of the elements because of MSN web site
changes. It was a big topic of conversation here on the group at the end of
April and the first week of May.

Ok, somehow I missed that big topic. Brain rot and all of that. Replacing element definitions worked perfectly.

Thanks for the reply.
