I have no idea what "actual quotes" means. Besides, if you have 20000
symbols, you're going to need to have at least 100 invocations of the
function.

Hmmm. What I did was Ctrl+A to select everything on the page, then use the
right mouse button to bring up the context menu, then chose "View Selection
Source".

Ctrl+U is probably giving you the DELIVERED source code of the web page, so
it won't contain the dynamically generated data portion of the web page.

Ctrl-A and "View Selection Source" does work. Thanks! But with FireFox, I can copy/paste just the screen selection into a spreadsheet. I just wish there is a way to automate this for multiple screens. Is there?

I would bet there is a way to automate it, but I haven't used anything like
that for nearly 20 years. Back then, I used a product called WinBatch. Or,
if you Google "windows scripting", you may find some alternatives.

RCHGetElementNumber Error

Hello,

I am new to this tool but so far I think it is fantastic. I am having a few issues learning this and specifically I have run into a problem that perhaps somebody can help me with. I am using the 10 year financial summary template, which works fantastic. If I plug in a ticker like AAPL or IBM, everything works great. However, my end goal is to gather some data for ticker PCC. Whenever I plug this in, I just get a bunch of "error" messages. Can anyone tell me why this is happening, or the best way to get historical financial statements for PCC? Is there something special I have to do to get info for a small cap stock?

Thanks so much!

Which template, specifically? There are several that have 10 years of data.

The reason PCC doesn't work is that it's a financial institution. They have
different line items than normal companies.

Quick Start

Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:14 am (PDT)

Hi,

I discovered this yty and I would like to both thank you and congratulate you. What you have done is absolutely amazing!

My only question is regarding sources. I have been looking through some of the spreadsheets and one I found from a different site and it appears that some sources have changed. For example, I understand that morningstar income statement figures return an error.

What are the current most reliable sources? And is there a list of elements to reference?

Also, I would appreciate it if you could please give me an example of a code that works in excel for the income statement. For example, Sales.
I need something in place of

RCHGetTableCell("http://quicktake.morningstar.com/Stock/Income10.asp?Symbol="&Ticker, 2, "Fiscal Year-End:", ">Revenue")

I have gone through the various files but am still having some trouble.

This project is amazing and very helpful. My only comment is that a quick start guide is needed with a) current best sources, b)codes/elements, c) a couple of examples.

Thank you and all the best!!!

The issue with MorningStar is that they have converted several pages to
dynamic loading of the data onto the page. However, the add-in extracts
data from the source code of the web page. So there is no data to extract
from the source code of the web page if the data is presented dynamically.

I considered the installation documentation to be the quick start guide. It
summarizes several of the more common functions and points to their
documentation, each of which have examples. The available elements are
documented in the XLS file that was in the ZIP archive.

Most people tend to go to AdvFN for data, simply because it has a wider
breadth of data available -- both in number of time periods and line items
for each time period.

Dear Randy,

I am new to all this. Is there a fee associated with all the data that is available? For a portfolio of stocks do I have to make the portfolio with the data provider or on Excel?

Thanks so much...

The fees would be dependent on the web sites you are getting data from. For
example, I subscribe to investors.com in order to get IBD data. But most of
the data sources are free.

For a portfolio worksheet, play around with the RCHGetYahooQuotes()
function.

Thank you for sending me the link, Randy.

The element numbers to which I am referring correspond to the numbers on the link, but how do I incorporate these changes into my spreadsheet? Or is it that the changes made by MSN cannot be incorporated into the "ADVFN" data that I get using the SMF Add-in?

Thanks again for your help.

You need to replace that file in the add-in folder on your computer. So:

1. Exit EXCEL
2. Replace the existing smf-elements-1.txt file with the new one
3. Restart EXCEL

The new element definitions will be picked up when you restart EXCEL.
