Hi Doug,
Would you mind sharing the spreadsheet you put together to extract the tickers from this code?

Not many individuals can afford the many thousands of dollars it would cost for a subscription to the Compustat data base. And the "SMF Add-In" you generously made available to the public at absolutely no cost runs a close second to Compustat's power to retrieve market data. Thank you for this unbelievable show of largesse.

I am trying to figure out a way to download the list of "Related" companies that appears upon inputting a stock symbol on the page: http://www.google.com/finance?q=ibm (IBM is my example). The page conveniently provides a list of companies that are similar to and compete with the subject company. So, for example, it lists IBM's competitors as ORCL, MSFT, HPQ, INTC, JAVA, CSCO, GOOG, DELL, AMC, and AMD.

Thank you for creating this very great program, it really teaches me alot. I have some few questions though,I am using yahoo , google, msn and reuters finance in getting datas. Before there was an S&P500 data at reuters but they removed it. Are there any sites except msn finance that I could go with to gather data for an S&P500?

Thank You
Archie

Yahoo's ETF browser has a lot of few data items:

That makes sense. Thank you for your help. It is pretty incredible you help so many people learn how to use this wonderful tool. Well my next question would be, is there some sort of template out there that would allow me to pull standardized financial statements for financial companies? I found this cool tool on here called smfGetAdvFNElement-Template-All-Line-Items which works awesome since it includes all the line items. The bummer is that each company reports different line items, so it is not feasible to link cells as the position and names of each line change as the company selected changes/

The reason PCC doesn't work is that it's a financial institution. They have different line items than normal companies.

You can use that template, but pick and choose which line items you want.
Just convert the list of line items into values on a financial company and
that would be your fixed location line items for financial companies.

Even on the normal companies' templates, all possible line items are not
being accounted for. Only those I chose to implement.

^GSPC vs VFINX v SPY

Does anyone know why ^GSPC have returns different from VFINX and SPY? My assumption is that ^GSPC is a total return index, and therefore, should give a return similar to (or should be MORE) than VFINX and SPY. But, my calculations show that the returns for ^GSPC are always LOWER than VFINX and SPY.

What's the reason behind that, anyone know?
