[ExcelVBA] Uising Excel for safety critical calculations

Hi All

I work in the medical field, and often hear (and read) comments like "Excel is not certified for safety critical calculations", despite the fact that the use of Excel in medicine (e.g. simple stuff like calculating drug dosage based on patient weight) is quite common. I was told there was something in the license aggreement (EULA) but I can't see anything in the MS Office 2010 EULA.

Quick search on Google revels that similar software packages have specific exclusions and a "use at own risk" statement.

There are legal liability issues to do with medical devices (and the so-called 'software medical device') so the choice of software (e.g. Excel or MATLAB) is important.

One interesting proposal in relation to Excel is to relase the VBA code as open source, which probably gets round the usual legal liability issues of transfering (i.e sharing) medical applications between hospitals.

I would be interested in you thoughts.

Regards, Phil
