No problem opening either. I agree. This would be far preferable to Yahoo
Groups.

Because I've been unhappy with the last few FILES area updates for Yahoo
groups, I'm trying to decide if I should put a rudimentary replacement on
the Internet.

I'm curious what people see with these:

http://www.ogres-crypt.com/SMF/

http://www.ogres-crypt.com/SMF/_index.html

Are they the same? Can you even access them?

It looks like I could change my hosting plan and get unlimited bandwidth
easily. So it might even be possible to have the element definitions online
for automatic updates. I don't know if that adds more danger or convenience.

Using Opera have had no problem accessing files on any of the new proposed set ups or the exiting one on Yahoo..

I agree with everything you say. There are many reasons to have your own website.

Most host also allow you to put up a forum which you can control.

But both are more work for you.

I'm sure if you ask, you could get help from us users to maintain certain sections of the site.

I'll be the first to volunteer to assist you. I maintain my own website plus a few others for friends. www.tradingourway.com

Several advantages to a website:
1. I can have direct links to the files and documentation.

2. I can organize the listings any way I want, even listing files in multiple places (e.g. "Yahoo" templates)

3. When you use a file from the Yahoo group, it's downloaded first to your computer, and then the local copy is opened. In Firefox, that can require one or more confirmation boxes where "OK" needs to be clicked before a file is opened. I find that a pain with the Documentation files. A minor issue, I know. But annoying, nonetheless.

4. I can add back usable file descriptions

5. I may be able to access the element definitions directly from the web, so there can be auto updates
For now, the question is how I want to organize the web pages. I'll actually store the data in a workbook and have EXCEL generate the web pages.

I don't see much difference between this and the yahoo group. I am not a big fan of yahoo's new groups layout and screens. Tough on us old folks to read.

My biggest problem with the content in the yahoo group files is that obsolete files are left there for years.

I'm really okay with either. Hopefully it will be one or the other but not both. Would be a nightmare for you to keep in sink.

You already do too much for us lazy users.

OK. I need more feedback. Main page:

http://www.ogres-crypt.com/SMF/

Check out the Documentation and Template links, as they have updated web
pages. One thing I'm wondering is if I should move the "Description" column
of the tables on the Documentation and Template pages so it is the column
next to the "Filename";? I tried to get accurate files sizes and last
modified times instead of using "last uploaded" times.

On the Documentation and Template pages, you should be able to use the
top-side links to jump to the various sections, and then the "Back to Top"
links to get back to the top-side links. And, of course, the very first
line on the top of the page allows you to link back to the previous web
page.

I probably should add more verbiage between the heading on the main page
and the table with the links.

What would you add or change?

Hi -
*) Doc link - don't bother with size/date like you're doing. Instead, use release date and version - no need to keep changing. If you tweak a file, note it in the description column: "Updated 2014/02 - grammer, added a hint" or similar. Highlight that change for 2 revisions or so.
*) Doc link - have one list. Add a column for "Applies to Options/Quotes/Yahoo" - like "OQY" for 3.0 function. Easier to search and maintain.
*) Doc->function link: add history paragraph at bottom, more complete than 1-liner on the Doc page.
*) Tem link - same general ideas as Doc.
*) WIP - link - nice :)
HTH - tbs

Thanks for the feedback!

Hmmm. After going through everything you had to say, an idea popped up --
would an option to export a CSV file be useful? Then you could put it into
EXCEL easily and manipulate it there. Maybe even as a single CSV file with
everything -- add a new column that indicates if the row is for
documentation, a template, or a new item in the Works-In-Progress
directory. Maybe even FAQs, when I start adding those.

For documentation files, there really aren't version numbers, and the last
modified date *is* the release date.

I'll have to think about change logs and versions on the documentation. I
don't update them that often. In fact, some could probably use updates.

> *) Doc link - have one list. Add a column for "Applies to
Options/Quotes/Yahoo" - like "OQY" for 3.0

I'm not sure how that makes it easier to search for on a web page. How
would you search a web page for all option-related documentation using that
column?

The whole point of using the different sections is to allow easier
searching within a similar group. Maybe more applicable to the templates,
but I'm using a similar worksheet page to generate the web page.

> *) Doc->function link: add history paragraph at bottom, more complete
than 1-liner on the Doc page.

There's more than a one-liner on the Doc page. I tried to add an example
there, to give more context for the function.

Are you talking about a history paragraph on the Doc page, or within each
function documentation page?

> *) Tem link - same general ideas as Doc.

As noted, I think the various groupings and sections are even more
important here. Same with file size, since some files can be fairly large.
I especially wanted the grouping of recently changed files.

I did add some yellow shading on the dates if it was within 15 days. But
that's of my creation of the web page, not the viewing date. I may have to
rethink how I want to do that.

> *) WIP - link - nice :)

Good. :)

I did put a CSV file up. It could either be opened with EXCEL directly, or
with SMF:

=smfGetCSVFile("http://ogres-crypt.com/SMF/SMF-All-Files.csv")

I had to do some fiddling with commas and quotes to get both working OK
with my version of EXCEL. Hopefully, other versions of EXCEL work OK with
it as well.

The "All-Files" is currently just the files I have online in a few of the
folders, so no one get too excited. :)

Hi Randy, The Reuters key developments template isn't working at my end. Tried fiddling with formula and still cannot get it to work. Also searched the site for possible solution with no luck.
Any suggestions from you on fixing the problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and Regards.

I just uploaded an updated copy of the workbook to the FILES area. I just
had to change the URL and the first offset to start the cascading
extraction.

Hi Randy, My xls file (RCHGetElementNumber() Element Definitions as of 2014-01-30) does have element #14452 to use for 5 year growth rate forecast? and I think you deleted it with your XLS file (from 2014-02-16)?

Randy can you suggest an element# for me to use to get the 5 year eps growth rate forecast? Another comparable element# for #14452 = S MorningstarAO Analyst Opinion -- Five-Year Growth Forecast?

Thanks

The best thing to do is open the elements file and search for whatever you need.

There is usually more than one element defined

Five-Year Growth search show 4 hits in the element file

Element #14452 is on the file as of 2014-02-16:

http://ogres-crypt.com/SMF/Works-In-Progress/RCHGetElementNumber-Element-Definitions.xls

As Kermit suggests, you can just search the file. It does have EXCEL
filtering already set up on it. But, if you don't like the M* one, you
could use Yahoo's:

=RCHGetElementNumber("MMM";,621)

Thanks Randy so much I am trying to make things working. I am trying to focus on the eps growth rate and dividend growth rates. To try and calculate a reasonable IV for KO Coca Cola. It seems expensive to me, but I am trying to force myself to run a simple future value test on eps and dividend growth.
Take care.

For as little as $29 /year you can join AAII.com and download most of their information. IT is already done for you. I think they still offer a free period.

Or for a small annual fee you can use dividend.com information
