Hey Randy - where is the official repository for SMF-ADDIN, the web site http://ogres-crypt.com/SMF/ or the yahoo-groups site?

Hey Randy,
Wow, the new files location on your web server is, well, superb. Thank you for doing it! I can now trash the long list of links I'd gathered to find documentation items and such.
Fellow members of the board: give it a try. It will answer LOTS of questions before you ask them, and give Randy more time to do other interesting things…
Go here: http://ogres-crypt.com/SMF/
(there are NO ogres there…I looked) J

The web site, which is under construction. Eventually, I'll delete all of
the documentation and templates from the FILES area, and all of the items
in the LINKS area. There are already a few 0-READ-ME.html files that have a
message about the files now being located on the web site.
I'll keep the "Uploads by Forum Members" here, because I won't have a
facility for uploading on the web site. I may move a few to the web site,
since some would be good examples and templates.
The Yahoo Group will still be the place to go for discussions, questions
and issues.

Hello!
With the most recent SMF plugin I've gotten my spreadsheet working wiith the UK AdvFN website and thought all was good. However on closer inspection I have found glaring errors n the Quarterly revenue numbers and have finally lost faith. There are probably other errors in the financial data as well I'm not going to waste anymore time on it.
Time to bite the bullet and move on. As I'm sure everyone knows, Gurufocus provides very rich data downloads in an XLS file. Works for me with just a free account. An example URL is http://www.gurufocus.com/download_dataset.php?symbol=INTC http://www.gurufocus.com/download_dataset.php?symbol=INTC
Anyway, I have a solid dev background in C, C++, Obj-C etc. etc. but am a relative beginner when it comes to VBA. I'd like to execute some code, pull down the XLS workbook for a given symbol, pull a bunch of the annual & quarterly data into my analysis workbook to replace all the crunching I now do with the AdvFN data. I suspect I'm going to have to pass a username and password along to some web query in VBA, is that possible? How do I discover the filename (which is variable) that is downloaded? So far I'm pretty impressed with the power Microsoft has built into Excel/VBA but the docs aren't always the friendliest to navigate.
Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated! And apologies up front if this is already covered somewhere; I couldn't find it.
Cheers,
a.

Can't help you with your overall question but if you plan to use Cash Flow statement data you should look at that pretty closely on GuruFocus. I found it nearly useless - but maybe that's just me. For example, their total for Investing Activities often did not match the individual line items. It so happens that they omit certain items from the website view (e.g., sometimes CapEX) although the total for the section matches the 10Q or 10K. I emailed them about this and this is their actual response:
"We have all those numbers. But because we do want to make the page too long, so we don't display them. Thanks! Charlie."
I gave up on them in favor of Morningstar and have been reasonably happy. I just wished they had more history.

The URL you cite just contained historical quotes, so I'm sure how that
equates to a "rich data download" example?
Doing things like logging in require interacting with an IE object. I
stopped doing that with EXCEL 2007, because all of those I had working in
EXCEL 2003 just wouldn't work properly in EXCEL 2007, no matter what tweaks
I tried. A message that shows a generic version of a log in process:

Have you looked at this file in the "Uploads by Forum Members" folder of
the FILES area?

Hi mikemcq802,
Thanks for the heads up! I'll look into it to see how my calculations etc. are impacted. What a pain, is there nowhere one can get decent longterm data...

Hi Randy,
Thanks for the thread and file pointers. Yes, I'd previously looked at the file you mentioned but it appeared to me to be scraping the GF webpages and not downloading the XLS file I mentioned.
For me, the workbook downloaded by the URL in my original message contains six sheets:
- Historical Prices (daily from 1990)
- Historical Dividends (since 1992)
- Historical Financials (both annual and quarterly from 1999 onward)
- Historical of Short (since 1995)
- Institutional Ownership (since 1995)
- Insider Ownership (since 2004)
If you are logged in to your Gurufocus account (free) and only getting the quote page then somethings amiss. Maybe I'm the benefactor of a bug on their end. It does seem rather generous of them...
Thanks for the help. And, of course, all the great work you've done providing the SMF plugin!

a.

Ahhh. Dummy me. I didn't notice there were multiple worksheets.
How about something like this:
Set wb1 = ActiveWorkbook
Workbooks.Open Filename:="
http://www.gurufocus.com/download_dataset.php?symbol=MMM"
Sheets("Historical Finacial").Name = "MMM-Financial"
Sheets("MMM-Financial").Copy Before:=wb1.Sheets(1)
Windows("download_dataset.php").Close False

Hi Randy...
I'm trying to use the RCHGetYahooHistory function to work from within a
VBA subroutine.
I put it into a macro, and this works fine. However, I would like to
have the function in a loop
so I can change the ticker with each pass through the loop. I have
tried several things to change
the ticker in the function, but no luck. Can this even be done? If
so, how?
Any help / comments would be appreciated...
Thanks...
Hank

Without knowing the specifics of what you're doing and what you tried, it's
tough to tell where you're going wrong. From reading what you're trying to
do, it should be simple -- just use a string variable as the first
parameter in the function, altering it as needed. In any case, maybe this
example can help:
