hi,
i'm still stuck on this. i have the addin in the std folder. i have created a ss twith about 20 tabs, pulling info from various interent sources (based on the various templates), and a sumamry tab where i look at things that i really want to see, my way. works well.
but when i open that file, i get the msg that links cannot be updated. i then edit links and the source is the rch...xla file, and the status is 'source is open'. when i close that window, i can then proceed changing the ticker, etc. i've lived with this step for quite a while, but now have time to figure out how to stop this from happening.
i copied the find/replacemacro from the msg in the links area, and ran it on every sheet. before that i did a manual find on every sheet, looking for the "rch_stock" string, but it is nowhere.

so, i'm not sure why excel gives me that msg when i open my file. in the date>edit link, update is set to automatic, the startup prompt is "don't display the alert and update links", and in the file options>advanced>general, i have the "ask to update automatic links" unchecked. (although i had it checked in the past with no change).

any thoughts or comments?
thanks much,
mike

It sounds to me like you don't have the add-in activated properly.

The only time links should need to be edited for the add-in is if you are
opening up a file that was saved with the add-in in a different location.

mot sure what you mean by your question. in the whole workbook, there are just a few defined names. i can step thru each of them, they are just references to single cells that exist on certain sheets in the workbook. no defined nme that reference outside workbooks.
can you clarify your question?

thanks. what do you mean by properly activated?
i scanned all the tab looking for "C:". in case there were remnants, but nothing was found. i even rename the folder where i store donwloaded templates, think some remnants might still exist in my file. same behavior.
when excel opens my file, and i'm prompted to edit links,, the edit links window only has the "rch" file, with a status is 'unknown'. when i click 'check status', the status changes to 'source is open' and i'm good to go.
maybe i
ll try uninsatlling the addin and reinstalling it.
but if you have more comments, i'd appreciate it.

In the past, I've not found the EXCEL "Edit Links" dialog to be a reliable
way to "fix" link errors related to the add-in.

Check out the "Link errors" item in the LINKS section of the Yahoo group.

If you close EXCEL, restart it, what do you get with this formula:

=RCHGetElementNumber("Version")

Location of the EXCEL worksheets will make no difference on add-in location
errors. It's telling you it can't find the add-in where the saved workbook
is claiming it should be. If you save the workbook after fixing location
errors, you should NOT get a location error upon opening the workbook again
unless you've moved the add-in.

I don't think your links problem is with the add-in.

If I open a functioning worksheet that uses the add-in, and flags no link
errors, I can also open "Edit Links" and see the add-in there with an
"Unknown" status.

Does this happen with any other workbook that uses the add-in?
