Hi Randy,

thanks for your reply. You are probably right but if I connect from inside the US using a VPN I have the same results.

If I copy and paste in the formula bar I get nothing in the cell but the formula itself. Maybe it's my limit in using Excel. If I treat it as a web address I go to the page, eg Costco in the first case.

When you paste, be sure to :"paste special" as text. Otherwise, it default
to pasting it as HTML data.

What URL do you end up with in IE if you enter this URL:

http://www.advfn.com/p.php?pid=financials&mode=quarterly_reports&symbol=COST

I attach three screenshot.
1. the excel screen shows you what I get when I paste (I also tried to write it manually) the link in the formula bar. Interesting to see that in the cell E16 shows up a us.advfn.com that is not in the formula.
2. The IE screen is what I get from your link. (no VPN at the moment). I also tried today to clear the IE cash and connect via VPN to see if there was any difference but the result is the same...some tickers work, others do not even if it goes straight to the US website.
3. Another excel screen to show you my loaded macros.
Again, thanks a lot for your help!
Luca

Ahhhh. The 2nd screenshot shows the answer. Look at the address bar at the
top. It says:

http://ae.advn.com....

...so you were redirected and it is using the London stock market as your
default stock exchange -- note the ticker symbol box on the page says
"LSE:COST"; (which is the Costain Grp).

There are no quarterly and annual financials details for "LSE:COST";, which
is why you're not getting data. You need the NASDAQ exchange version of
COST to get data.

You could try something like:

=smfGetAdvFNElement("NASDAQ:COST","A",1,">date preliminary data
loaded<",,"--")

=RCHGetElementNumber("NASDAQ:COST",5206)

Hi Randy,

What causes this to occur out of the clear blue? Spreadsheet works fine for
weeks, then you open it and a bunch of the cells are screwed up because when
it opened and updated the links, like it asks every time you open it, it
does this:

='C:\SMF Add-In\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla'!smfConvertData('C:\SMF
Add-In\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla'!smfStrExtr('C:\SMF
Add-In\RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla'!smfGetTagContent("http://www.gurufocu
s.com/stock/"&$A3,"td",-1,"id=""pettm_indu_tools"""),"Median:","vs"))

I didn't add any other add-ins or make any changes to my computer and it
worked fine last night.
Thanks.

Best regards,
Jim

In general, it should only happen when your current location of the add-in
under the add-in manager is different than the location that was in force
when that particular workbook was saved.

Whenever I run into it, I just run the smfFixLinks macro.

Hi again,

Sorry to be a bother. Did you happen to see my question? I know this topic
has come up before, but it looks like the C:\ etc. reference has gotten
added multiple times. That seems really unusual.

Thank you Randy.

Best regards,
Jim

The reason it gets added multiple times is that when a workbook is saved,
EXCEL saves a hard-coded location of the add-in to EACH function invocation
from the add-in.

When the workbook is opened, that hard-coded location is compared to the
location of the add-in in the add-in manager. If they are the same, it
marks the link as resolved and removes the hard-coded location prefix.
Otherwise, it leaves it there and labels it as an unresolved link.

If this is happening on a workbook you saved, and you didn't move the
add-in, I'm not sure what to tell you. The only time I've seen that happen
is when the add-in has been located on an external server of some type --
it appears EXCEL won't reconcile those links, possibly because drives can
be mapped differently?

So this is something EXCEL does. I have no control over it.

This is usually something that happens when people share workbooks, and the
add-in is in a different location (according to their add-in managers).

Oh thanks. Sorry. Outlook seems to eat some of my emails from time to time.

Yeah, this one today really messed up my spreadsheet. I had closed Excel out and reopened this spreadsheet and hadn't even rebooted, then the cells were screwed up.
I'll have to go through all the cells and fix them. Just wish I could figure out how to keep it from happening.

Best regards,
Jim

Just run the smfFixLinks macro. I have it assigned to a button on my EXCEL
toolbar, for when this happens in workbooks I open up from other people.

When I try to pull up that smfFixLinks macro, Alt-F8, there are no macros in there. How do I activate it?

Alt-F8 only lists macros from open workbooks, not add-ins.

You need to type in the name of the macro, then the "Run" button should
activate.

Much easier as a button. :)
