I was looking at my Daily trade alerts and decided to read this article.
The article is suppose to be a method of determining "Quality and value" as
the article states"

"What you'll find below is a nearly foolproof way to evaluate the quality
and the value of any business."

After reading it I thought I'd try creating a sample SMF ADDIN workbook to
calculate the values mention in the paper.

In looking thru the RCHGetElementNumber-Element-Definitions.xls for the
proper elements
I got "error" return on 2 elements 3900 and 3901.

I had an older version than the one in the work-in-progress folder. So I
upgraded to the latest version as shown the table below.

It appears I have the same failures with elements 3930 and 3931.

I'm wondering if goggle is no longer supporting years 5 and 6?

Exactly. When I defined the elements, Google was showing 6 years of annual
financial statements. Now they only show 4.

PS: I would think you'd want to use TTM data instead of annual statements.
The numbers on the annual financial statements can be up to a year old.

I built a screen for Stock Investor Pro evaluating just the prior years data. I eliminated OTC, ADR/ADS, Utilities and Financial sectors from consideration. Only 19 companies cut the mustard and all look to be good candidates. There are a few that came up as potential buys once their technicals look just a little better (MACD, RSI, Stochastics, etc.). Thanks for the idea.

I'm curious which companies your screen coughed up? When I tried it on
Portfolio123.com, I get 49 non-OTC companies after the 4th rule, 29 after
the 5th rule, and 13 after a liquidity rule I use to check the minimum
trading level over the past 50 days:

It looks like we only have one stock in common, GILD. But, as a whole, these 19 stocks performed well over the past 7 years. Stock Investor Pro doesn't have all the fields specified in the article, so I used the Field Editor to create a few custom fields to complete the ruleset. I'll go back and recheck those formulas.

Checked my formulas: Database didn't have capital returned to shareholders, so I used dividends * shares outstanding. It also didn't have net tangible assets, so I used accounts receivable+inventory+cash-accounts payable+net fixed assets. I hadn't implemented the fifth formula, but once I applied it, the list was further whittled down to the following six companies:

Coach Inc
COH

Gilead Sciences, Inc.
GILD

Hi-Crush Partners LP
HCLP

Ituran Location and Control Lt
ITRN

Natural Health Trends Corp.
NHTC

Terra Nitrogen Company, L.P.
TNH

By the way, thanks for creating the SMF Add-In. I still use it to create financial statements of companies that I'm interested in, and I use that data to complete my calculations (ratios, DCF, Dividend, NCAV, etc.) for making my stock purchasing decisions. Just wish MSN hadn't revised their web pages because they provided enough data to effectively evaluate financial institutions and insurance companies as well.
Regards,Joe McCarthy

I lose COH on the Return on Invested Capital (0.14%).

I lose HCLP on shareholder payout (-1.35%) -- they sold a bunch of shares
of stock in 2nd quarter, 2014.

I lose NHTC on the EV / EBITDA ratio (18.78).

I lose ITRN and TNH on my liquidity check -- I require at least $2M worth
of trading on a stock for each of the last 50 days. Most people use an
average over the last 50 days, but I've seen stocks that pass that even
though they have some days that had ZERO shares traded. Not a good thing if
you're trying to buy or sell, as the price may change significantly.
Especially in a screen that is having a good backtest -- the bankroll grows
and grows over the years, so each stock held may need to be larger and
larger positions.

Leaving just GILD of those 6 from my P123 screen.

The calculated ratios and raw data I am using/getting from P123:

Otherwise, most of the others are very close, if not spot on.

In my backtest, no stocks are bought from 1999 until mid-2002. And then,
only 1 or 2 at first, growing to a handful. And then even more. So the
method is somewhat sensitive to the market. Which makes sense, I guess.

When I went back and adjusted the screen to use the must current quarterly data, I had COH drop off at Rule 3 as well.

This interested me, so I took a stab at it, using Guru Focus TTM data. I'm
a premium member, and not sure if some of the data items collected are
premium data items. I'm also using a few advanced techniques in the
smfUpdateDownloadTable process (note defined names to pick up the relative
location column items).

I did have some companies with no capital expenditures, so the ratio should
probably be changed to a comparison. And some had no net income data
element (I suspect financial institutions).

The companies I used were dividend champions, plus the 3 passing companies
in the article. Using an online stock screener to get a limited number of
candidates, then running them on this workbook for final computations, may
be the best way to go. Please don't use this to bulk download LARGE amounts
of data and THEN screen.

With no trading costs, annual returns since 1999 are 9.65% per year,
compared to 3.31% or the S&P 500 index.

If I add the 5th restriction, annual returns go up to 13.51%
