I did restart (and even rebooted), but errors remain. Actually, I didn't install the new release; rather, I modified the code in the version I was using (2.0K) after saving the original. I changed the URL in 2 places. Were there other changes to those lines other than changing 'www' to 'us' and back? Guess it's time for me to upgrade anyway.

2.0k is so old, I can make no claims about it whatsoever... :)

That might even be before the new smfGetAdvFNElement() function, which is
what all the element definitions are based on right now.

Yeah, I understand. Same reason Mr. Softee drops support on XP SP2 and older. You shouldn't have to worry about 2.0K. Fact is, I never use the new GetAdvFNElement function -- still using plain old GetElementNumber. 2.0k was serving me well, so I stuck with it. Looks like it's upgrade time....

I have "issues" too but the latest SMF is not one of them - it's working
fine :)

Exit Excel, double-check you installed it correctly, and restart Excel. If
still not working use the below and let us know:

The result I got is:

Stock Market Functions add-in, Version 2.1.2012.02.02 (C:\Program Files\SMF Add-in; 1)

It appears to be installed correctly...Retrieval from websites is not a problem. Any thought as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks...

One more unsual observation...

When I run smfaddin on my home laptop I'm using version 2.1.2010.08.02 and I never had a problem retrieving data from ADVFN this whole time even when they changed their website URL. However, on my work computer, I had trouble retieving data from ADVFN a few days ago and then made the smfaddin update which worked fine for awhile and now is a problem again. Why is it that my home laptop never had the problem and my work lap does? Does anyone have a good explanation for this? Thanks again for everybody's help.

What's your issue, Mike? I installed the new emergency release and everything works properly except that in the case of WDC (Western Digital), I had to add the 'NYSE:' prefix. That wasn't the case earlier or even while the website was 'us.advfn.com'. This problem usually occurs because the Ticker exists on another exchange, e.g., London.

Might the problem I am having with WDC be the reason that AdvFN changed the URL to 'us.advfn.com' and not with users hogging their bandwidth?

BTW, the problem I describe here with the 'WDC' ticker is an old one and is an issue with AdvFN, not with SMF. If I remember correctly, there was a conflict with 'MMM' (i.e.,'MMM' was a ticker for a LSE stock), but that isn't the case now. Go figure.

AdvFN Returning Error

Posted by: "paul84j" paul84j@yahoo.ie   paul84j

Hello, I was retrieving data from AdvFN fine until yesterday but now I'm getting the "Error" msg.

1. I went back to the previous version of the add-in that used "www.advfn.com" instead of "us.advfn.com" but the Error remained.

2. I downloaded and installed today's Add-in that seems to make the prefix irrelevant but again I'm still getting the error.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Paul.

None at all. Everything is working fine for me here. Hard for me to fix
something if I'm not getting the error.

Hmmm. There is and AdvFN issue pointed to in the "Links" area of the group.
Have you made that fix? But I don't know why it would suddenly become an
issue now.

Enter '=RCHGetElementNumber("Version") in a cell. Depending on the Version you see, you'll know whether the correct version is installed. You can also go into the VBA source code for the add-in and do a FIND on 'advfn' for the current project and eventually hit the URLs for AdvFn.

Thanks for the reply - this is driving me crazy.

Entering '=RCHGetElementNumber("Version") in a cell returns:

Stock Market Functions add-in, Version 2.1.2012.02.02 (C:\Program Files\SMF Add-in; 1)

so the latest version is installed.

VBA source code shows for the modGetAdvFNelement is:

sURL = "http://" & kAdvFNPrefix & ".advfn.com/p.php?pid=financials" & "&symbol=" & sTicker & sLabel1

which tallies with the Version.

I'm outside US and my default AdvFN website is UK. But like I said this wasn't an issue up until yesterday.

Any other ideas most welcome....

Ok I found the problem.

I went into the code for modGetAdvFNElement and changed

Const kAdvFNPrefix = "www" to
Const kAdvFNPrefix = "uk"

and I'm back in business. I don't know why I had to make this change since it worked before with both the www.advfn.com and then us.advfn.com URLs.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, it's appreciated...

For what it's worth Paul, I can mimic your findings even from my US computer. I connected with a VPN to an Ireland server. Then, from Firefox, typing www.advfn.com redirected me to the uk.advfn site. While connected to Ireland I could *not* retrieve advfn data thru SMF without changing the prefix to "uk" in the source code.

Interestingly, while on the UK site I also had a quirk with one ticker. I typed in TRI hoping to get Thomson Reuters as I would from www.advfn but I got a completely different company. I had to use nyse:tri when accessing through uk.advfn (FF and SMF).

I use Witopia as my VPN provider for secure wifi access on my smartphone and laptop. I don't need it for security on my desktop but it comes in handy once/while to look like somebody else.

I remember someone pointing out that a Windows Update effected this a while back, but I ignored it because I use Firefox. Making the change to IE that you suggest clears up the need to add the 'NYSE:' prefix for certain tickers.

Thanks, Randy. Your diligence with these problems is much appreciated.

Values for RCHGetElementNumber elements Different from Yahoo Pages

Posted by: "Christopher" miller@sun-capital.net   jcredline

I am using =RCHGetElementNumber for JNJ

Returning Values for Element # 596(Avg Estimate FY1) & 596(Avg Estimate FY2) of $4.76 and $5.22. The Yahoo Analyst Estimates page displays $5.11 and $5.43?

Returning Value for Element # 4928 (5 Year Average Dividend Yield) of 2.90%. The Yahoo Key Statistics page displays 3.10%?

I have loaded the updated add_in for 2012.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris

I just tried the three element numbers and I'm getting the correct values
-- $5.11, $5.43, and 3.1%.

I suspect you have your Internet Options set up to cache web pages, so the
add-in is picking the data up from an old copy of the web page. Verify that
you are set up to always get a fresh copy of the web page.

IBD and RCHGetTableCell Error

Hi Randy.
I am a subscriber of IBD but I try to apply the formula for ratings
information but always get Error.
=RCHGetTableCell("
http://www.investors.com/StockResearch/StockCheckup.aspx?symbol="&A$5,1,">RS
Rating")
I saw the post on this subject, but always fails. In Excel / Data / Web
enter my username and pswd and see the results but not the formula does not
extract the data.
I will appreciate your answer.
