Change AdvFN URL from "www" to "uk"

Hi Randy,

I had a problem accessing AdvFN which was overcome by changing the constant

Const kAdvFNPrefix = "www" to Const kAdvFNPrefix = "uk"

but I can't save this change in the add-in so end up having to make the change everytime I open Excel. Is the add-in password protected?

Paul.

No, it's not password protected. The problem of not being able to save
changes is why I ended up moving my copy of the add-in to "C:\SMF Add-in"
instead under the "Program Files" folder. Microsoft changed security in
Vista so that edits like that can no longer be saved into the "Program
Files" folder without special permissions.

I've been trying to figure out if there is a more automatic way of setting
or maintaining that constant. What I'm thinking right now is to have the
add-in look for a file like "AdvFN-prefix.txt". If the file doesn't exist,
the add-in will use "www", otherwise you could create the text file and
just put "uk" in it, and it would use that. That way, if the add-in gets
updated, that file doesn't get replaced and your settings are maintained
from version to version.

Re: Is yahoo VOLUME split-adjusted?

Thanks pharnsbe. I agree with your findings and can add a small bit.

The volume is adjusted for splits, as you say (including the day-before
error) and is *not* adjusted for dividends. I think that's correct but it
does lead to an issue.

Yahoo's historical record for volume *units* is correct but you cannot
correctly calculate a historical *dollar* volume for any stocks that issue
dividends. The reason is simply that Yahoo's Adj Close price includes both
splits and dividend adjustments and its "raw close" doesn't adjust for any
activities. The longer the time period and the larger the dividend the more
distorted the dollar volume calculation would be.

I determined the volume was not dividend-adjusted by doing a screen capture
of Yahoo data for SO in late January and looked at its data after its
dividend on Feb 2. Sure enough, the Adj Close price was adjusted for this
distribution but the volume figures were not.

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful responses.

I've done some more research and it appears that yahoo volume IS indeed
adjusted for splits. For example, I'm going to upload to the files area a
worksheet titled "Yahoo Volume Is Split Adjusted.xls".

I looked at a few symbols that split in December 2011
(http://quotes.ino.com/analysis/splits/) and compared yahoo data to
quotes-plus adjusted, and quotes-plus "raw" (unadjusted).

That worksheet uses ROST as an example, but I checked the volume data on a
number of symbols and found the same result, which is yahoo volume matches
the quotes-plus adjusted volume, and does not match the quotes-plus raw
volume. Curiously, I also noticed that yahoo volume tended to be 2x the QP
value on the day prior to the split... as if yahoo accidentally multiplied
by 4 instead of 2 on that one day. I found this "error" on a number of
symbols, just on the day before the split. It could also be the case that
yahoo was correct on that day and QP was wrong, but given the abnormally
high volume reading it seemed more likely yahoo was in error.

Update: check a few more data sources... seems QP was correct, yahoo volume
reading for the day before the split is wrong.

Hi Randy,

This template does not work anymore. Excel tells me, that the Get-Data.xla cannot be found.

Is there a change with the new stockmarketfunctions.xla?

regards

Dieter

I have no idea what Get-Data.xla is. I don't get such a message when I try
the file.

However, you are correct the file no longer works. I just uploaded a new
copy that worked for a few ticker symbols I tried. But I was keying off of
anchor links, and I recall they don't exist on some of the entries...?
